A Quiet Place: Day One Ratings & Reviews
- rg9400November 1, 2024I think this movie is probably better than the other two entries in this franchise. There's a much more compelling character-centric story and some actual cool camera shots. In a lot of ways, it's a lot better than it has any right to be, especially considering the questionable plots of the mainline entries. However, I still didn't find it as engaging as some of the other surprise franchise entries this year, mainly because I find the threat/premise to not actually be very suspenseful. The "action" sequences of people very quietly and slowly inching and moving with shots of their face to indicate fear is just kind of boring to me. If this didn't bother you from the other movies, then definitely check this out. But if you struggled with those movies, then while I think this certainly elevates the concept, it doesn't evolve beyond it. Lupita Nyong'o is excellent as you'd expect. I still don't find Joseph Quinn that impressive, but he's not bad. To be clear though, the cat is the real star.
- Das_LamaJuly 4, 2025I am amazed about how much noise these folks made while hiding from creatures that hunt using ultra sensitive hearing.
- Matthew DiPietroFebruary 26, 2025Way better than I expected! Wonderful character development and interesting relationship building with almost no dialogue. The monsters are mostly a backdrop. Thumbs up.
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025I’m a huge sucker for monster movies, and A Quiet Place: Day One certainly offers a healthy dose of monster movie mayhem and has an emotional performance from Lupita Nyong’o as its beating heart. [Read my Full Review] However, a protagonist that is not exactly interested in her own long term viability, mutes much of the tension essentially lowering the emotional stakes in most of the suspense filled moments (outside of hoping and praying that Frodo survives). The film is plagued by frustrating character decisions (obviously a common horror movie trope….but it doesn’t have to be.) Plus, I was rather annoyed that Eric (Joseph Quinn) wouldn’t just leave the poor woman alone. The big city setting lends itself to some fresh action and spectacle for the franchise, and I still enjoyed spending time in this world.
- VarunOctober 19, 2024Totally unrealistic because my cat refuses to be carried and would meow and get me killed instantly, I have no idea how this one stayed quiet throughout. Also totally realistic that I would do anything to get a slice of pizza since it’s my favourite food. This was honestly quite a bore. I don’t think it was an unneeded prequel, I’m sure people were always interested to know how these aliens arrived on Earth and what followed, but the previous movies worked because it was centered on this family of characters who were interesting and had high stakes reasons to survive. Here the protagonists are so bland. There’s also only so many surprise scares you can do with these monsters until they get boring. There was a scene where the guy walks into a nest of aliens to save the cat, but they never show how he gets out, there’s just a cut and he’s suddenly back safe. The tension just seems blandly manufactured with no care. The CGI was good and some scenes were pretty cool. I wanted this movie to end asap, the only reason I continued was for the cat lol.
- TanalienNovember 2, 2024A Quiet Place: Day One faced great odds to buck the trend of inferior prequel movies. Could it introduce compelling relationships, teach us something new about its world, and ultimately engross us? No. As the credits rolled, I wondered how Paramount Pictures green-lit such a vapid film, one that bores and feels completely inessential to the superb franchise in its name.
- RyezooFebruary 4, 2025Great performance from Lupita Nyong'o as expected. She can do so much with her eyes. Some cool sequences as well. Loved the car scene with the deflating tire. Story-wise though this brought nothing new to the table. I am a cat person, but man did the cat take me out of it. Also Joesph Quinn really had nothing to do besides make it more difficult to survive on the streets. I will still tune into more from this franchise but this one easily finishes behind the pack of the other films.
- Desmond DaleJanuary 24, 2025While the acting is quite stellar from the stong leads, this prequel feels stale despite exhibiting many of the positive traits of the first film. It takes very few risks which puts it in a place that feels somehow superior to the sequel and yet also less exciting. Day One adds very little to the series in terms of cinematic narrative and world building. It could be just a symptom of my sequel fatigue, but the more Quiet Place films they make the more I wonder why the series even exists artistically. Although, it's obvious why they exist commercially. There's nothing that this film offers that we haven't woefully seen dozens and dozens of times since Cloverfield. Why does everything need to be a series? Why not try and explore a concept as fully and thoroughly as one can in the first film and then move on to something else. Most of my most favorite horror films were one-offs outside of the first two Alien movies.
- Roderick Vaughn BridgesJanuary 10, 2025The storyline needed to have you care a little more about the characters being that it wasn't.That's action packed as it should have been.
- Stuart GubermanDecember 27, 2024It actually explains a lot then the first two make more sense because of this exposition.
- ScottDecember 26, 2024A natural extension of the familial themes explored in the first 2 movies. This time about found family there's an emotional core that I don't think even the first two movies got to. And while it takes one action scene too many there's earnest emotion and chemistry between Quinn and Nyong'o that make this a worthy addition to the franchise.
- The Gutter MonkeyNovember 26, 2024The epitome of a mediocre post-apocalyptic adventure. It's a good enough watch while you're doing chores.
- DJOctober 21, 2024Working as a sort of prequel to the original, or at least a prequel to the post-invasion, Day One is a solid standalone film in the now trilogy. While this seems to be more of a drama compared to the first two, it still contains a good amount of suspense. You also get to learn more about the creatures that attacked as well. This movie is bleak, but you should know that after seeing the first two. Acting is great from the lead, despite it being a “quiet” movie. Fans of the series should be happy with this film and I do hope they continue to explore this universe.
- AbbaOctober 20, 2024Second half was much better. Tunnel scene under water was 👌🏽
- jackmeatOctober 19, 2024My quick rating - 6.3/10. When the bar is set so high from the previous two, just because this one isn't as good surely doesn't make it a bad movie. Day One takes us back to the very beginning of the terrifying alien invasion that brought the world to its knees. This time, the setting is New York City, where we follow a woman named Samira/Sam (Lupita Nyong'o) as she struggles to survive alongside her cat in a city overtaken by sound-hunting creatures. The film captures the frantic desperation of those first days, offering a new perspective on the chaos that ensued as society collapsed. One of the standout elements, as with its predecessors, is the exceptional use of sound. In Day One, sound once again plays a crucial role, not just as a component of the film but as a character in its own right. The way silence and noise are manipulated to create tension is masterfully done, keeping you on edge throughout. This dynamic has become a hallmark of the franchise, and it's executed just as effectively here. The camera work is another highlight, with shots that emphasize the claustrophobic environment of the city and the constant threat of the alien creatures. The cinematography captures the stark contrast between the bustling urban landscape and the eerie quiet that now blankets it. The special effects are well-executed, particularly in the portrayal of the aliens, which are given more screen time in this installment. For those who were hoping to get a better look at these terrifying creatures, this flick delivers. However, despite all of this, it doesn't quite reach the heights of its predecessors. The story, while engaging, lacks the emotional depth and originality that made the first two films stand out. Sam's journey is compelling, but it doesn't resonate as deeply as the family dynamics that were central to the earlier films. The film does a good job of expanding the world of A Quiet Place, but it doesn't offer many new surprises or insights. In conclusion, it is a solid addition to the franchise, even if it doesn't quite live up to the high expectations set by the previous films. It maintains the tension and fear that fans have come to expect, with great camera work, effective use of sound, and impressive special effects. While it may not be as groundbreaking or emotionally powerful as its predecessors, it still offers a gripping and intense experience that's worth watching for fans of the series.
