I’m a huge sucker for monster movies, and A Quiet Place: Day One certainly offers a healthy dose of monster movie mayhem and has an emotional performance from Lupita Nyong’o as its beating heart. [Read my Full Review] However, a protagonist that is not exactly interested in her own long term viability, mutes much of the tension essentially lowering the emotional stakes in most of the suspense filled moments (outside of hoping and praying that Frodo survives). The film is plagued by frustrating character decisions (obviously a common horror movie trope….but it doesn’t have to be.) Plus, I was rather annoyed that Eric (Joseph Quinn) wouldn’t just leave the poor woman alone. The big city setting lends itself to some fresh action and spectacle for the franchise, and I still enjoyed spending time in this world.
