I think this movie is probably better than the other two entries in this franchise. There's a much more compelling character-centric story and some actual cool camera shots. In a lot of ways, it's a lot better than it has any right to be, especially considering the questionable plots of the mainline entries. However, I still didn't find it as engaging as some of the other surprise franchise entries this year, mainly because I find the threat/premise to not actually be very suspenseful. The "action" sequences of people very quietly and slowly inching and moving with shots of their face to indicate fear is just kind of boring to me. If this didn't bother you from the other movies, then definitely check this out. But if you struggled with those movies, then while I think this certainly elevates the concept, it doesn't evolve beyond it. Lupita Nyong'o is excellent as you'd expect. I still don't find Joseph Quinn that impressive, but he's not bad. To be clear though, the cat is the real star.
