While DS9 continues the Star Trek trend of a weak beginning, it follows its peers in becoming a truly great installment that Trekkies will return to throughout the ages.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the once-difficult Trek sibling that now feels almost perfectly suited to long-form viewing. Set not on a starship but on a former Cardassian station near Bajor and the wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant, the show trades weekly exploration for accumulation: politics, faith, trauma, commerce, espionage, family, and war all sharing the same badly lit corridors. Benjamin Sisko gives the series its moral and emotional weight, not just as a Starfleet commander but as a widower, father, reluctant religious figure, and wartime leader. Kira Nerys keeps the occupation of Bajor from becoming mere backstory. Odo and Quark give the station its daily comic friction. Jadzia Dax, Bashir, O’Brien, Jake, Nog, Worf, Garak, Dukat, and the wider supporting cast make DS9 feel less like a television set and more like a place people actually live, argue, drink, scheme, and recover in. The show’s great strength is that it lets consequences remain. The Dominion War does not simply provide bigger space battles; it tests the Federation’s principles under pressure. That is where DS9 becomes more than “dark Trek”. It becomes Trek after the brochure, when idealism has to pay rent and repair the plumbing. Not every episode lands, but the overall arc is rich, strange, and unusually durable. A series that looked like the odd one out in the 1990s now feels like one of the franchise’s most rewarding long games.

The best Trek ever made. Endlessly rewatchable.

Probably the Best of the series, storywise, with excellent writing and superb acting; they don't make them like this anymore.

Star Trek, as good as it gets, better than you are expecting. I like most Star Trek, this just stands out

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine took the foundation laid by The Next Generation and pushed the franchise into far deeper, darker, and more complex territory. Where earlier series often hinted at moral conflict, DS9 embraced it fully, exploring politics, faith, identity, and the true cost of war. Its characters were refreshingly flawed—carrying trauma, secrets, and contradictions that made them feel profoundly human. The long-form storytelling was revolutionary for Star Trek. Season-long arcs centered on the Bajoran occupation’s aftermath, the Klingon-Cardassian War, and ultimately the Dominion War gave the series weight and consequence rarely seen in the franchise before. Victories felt costly, and compromises were often morally uncomfortable. Captain Sisko, Kira, Odo, Dukat, and Garak remain some of the most layered characters Star Trek has ever produced. Their relationships and choices drove the story as much as any starship. By daring to challenge the franchise’s idealism without abandoning it, Deep Space Nine became not only one of the best Star Trek series ever made, but one of television’s most thoughtful science-fiction dramas.

This is the best Star Trk series when it comes to the acting, themes, humor and action. I'm definitely NOT a "Trekie". never watched much of this series but from time to time, use to watch a episode in the 90's.

Peak Star Trek. Capt Sisko is legendary, as is the entire cast. May the prophets remaster this in 4K 🙏 (they could remaster the whole series for 1/4 the cost of one NuTrek episode!)
