Humans remains one of the better understated sci-fi dramas of the 2010s because it keeps its biggest ideas close to ordinary life. Set in a parallel present where lifelike androids called Synths have become household appliances, care workers, labourers, companions, and objects of desire, the series uses one family’s purchase of a Synth named Anita to open up a much larger story about consciousness, exploitation, grief, labour, and moral responsibility. The production is restrained and excellent: clean, grounded, quietly eerie. Gemma Chan’s performance as Anita/Mia carries much of the show’s power, while Katherine Parkinson, Colin Morgan, Emily Berrington, Ivanno Jeremiah, William Hurt, Ruth Bradley, and the wider cast give the story emotional weight beyond the premise. What begins as domestic disruption eventually becomes a civil rights drama, especially as the show moves into the consequences of conscious Synths demanding recognition. It is not perfect. Some later storylines broaden the world in ways that are less elegant than the first season’s intimate tension. But the series holds together because its central question remains sharp: if we create something that looks human, works for us, cares for us, remembers for us, and eventually suffers because of us, how long can we keep calling it a thing? A thoughtful, rewatchable, quietly disturbing sci-fi series that has aged better than expected.
