This sitcom spun off from the Martin Scorsese movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore deals with the misadventures and trials of aspiring singer Alice Hyatt, her son Tommy, and her co-workers at a greasy-spoon diner in Phoenix, Arizona.

    Take Him, He's YoursAlice says that Tommy has been difficult lately. When Tommy arrives at Mel's with a dirt bike that he traded his electric guitar for, Alice goes through the roof. Mel believes that he could do better handling Tommy. A fed up Alice agrees to let Tommy go live with Mel. Mel soon finds out that he has bitten off more than he can chew.

Problem is that the cops let Schneider go for lack of evidence. Schneider has pistol whipped a witness before. Mel is spooked and paranoid.

To encourage him, Alice agrees to give up chocolate; Vera agrees to stop smoking, and Flo agrees to give up coffee. After everyone is caught back-sliding, Mel reveals he has wagered with the bookie that he can stop gambling. If Mel wins, he gets the car back. If Mel loses, he loses the dinner.

After Mel reminds her that she had not been able to join the police for lack of a diploma, Flo vows to go to night school. Flo gets Alice and Tommy to help her study. Mel's Diner 20th anniversary party is the setting for the gang to patch things up.

Thornton is surprised as well when he meets Tommy's "Old Lady".

Flo tells the DJ that she is all alone without a date. Suddenly Flo realizes she is on the air and hangs up in embarrassment. Flo will not be alone for much longer.

    Sweet CharityThe Golden Circle Charity Ball at the Baltimore Hotel is coming up. Roy Clark, O. J. Simpson and Bette Davis will be there. Alice's latest flame Eric reveals that he has 4 tickets to the sold out event through the company he works for. Alice invites both Vera and Flo, but they each think that they can take dates. Things get worse when Mel wants to bully his way in for 2 tickets. The confusion and tension only gets worse from here.
