Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Ratings & Reviews
- Brad LedbetterMay 1, 2025The main draw of any Kaiju movie is the sense of scale as these titanic creatures duke it out on the sea, in the air, and especially in crowded city streets. The 2014 Godzilla was able to convey this sense of massive scale by keeping the action limited and viewed from the perspective of humans as Godzilla crashed through bridges and skyscrapers. The problem in this film is that 90% of the run time takes place in the Hollow Earth world that exists beneath the surface of the Earth which was established in the previous film. The Hollow Earth is a wide open expanse inhabited by giant creatures on the scale of Kong and Godzilla. During parts of the film we have Kong fighting against giant apes in giant caves, which lose all sense of size and make it seem like a Planet of the Apes movie with far less plot and substance. Overall the action feels weightless and without stakes. The human characters contribute very little, with the exception of Dan Stevens who excels by hamming it up as a Titan veterinarian who builds a cybernetic power glove for Kong. Brian Tyree Henry, on the other hand, deserves far better than playing the now tired cliché of the conspiracy nut (now the modern podcaster) who happens to be right about everything. He is supposed to be the comic relief, but mostly his role is just screaming about every occurrence that happens in Hollow Earth. I honestly cannot recommend this movie, even for dumb fun. It's more boring than entertaining at every turn. If you're interested in Godzilla, I would instead highly recommend checking out Godzilla Minus One. A kaiju film that has compelling human characters with growth and genuine emotion. Godzilla is a fearsome force of nature in this film who never loses the immense sense of scale from the beautiful cinematography. My personal favorite movie of 2023 and a much better use of time.
- tyrrellseMarch 9, 2025Probably one of the best Monsterverse movies ever.
- Ted CartMarch 9, 2025TL;DR: I expected to watch 5 minutes then stayed for 2 hours. This movie is FUN - lots of FUN - pure and simple. It knows what it is and it delivers. Plot holes? You bet! Look, do you want epic monster fights or not? Cuz they got some REAL good monster fights, like, with pathos and kick-ass fight choreography. The monsters carry a proper sense of weight but still do some anime-worthy epic kicks and punches. Buildings are fodder, we're clearly not worried about damage to the city(s) - Godzilla is mad! Kong needs help! The plot is a carousel of trope after trope and it's BEAUTIFUL. Every plot point states plainly, "This story is not original because that isn't why you're here" and yet the story engaged me anyway - not because of the characters but because you never know what trope is coming next. Every plot beat is a cliche, but which cliche is next?! This movie somehow understands and demonstrates clearly this style of storytelling is valid entertainment. And even though the script is more concerned with monster fights than humanity the actors f***ing nailed it! Perfect blockbuster, easy cheesy character arcs really CAN make you smile, almost like embracing these predictable moments without irony is enough to carry you along. It's also super-efficient about people explaining a monster's motive before brushing them aside (sometimes literally) to get back to the spectacle on which this movie unabashedly prides itself. Kick back and enjoy the ride!
- PapaHamzehMarch 6, 2025Whatever. The monsters are cool. Big Monkey fought other Big Monkey. That was cool. Ice Dragon. Sea Dragon (who got nuked by The God King himself). God King monster still goated.
- VarunOctober 19, 2024Came in with low expectations but I enjoyed this one. I’ve been watching the anime Kaiju No. 8, and I also recently watched Gozilla Minus One and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. So I’m happily eating up all the animal fights right now. The CGI was pretty good and I’m glad they focused much more on the monsters rather than the human plot. The humans were also decently entertaining this time around, I liked the addition of Dan Stevens and there were some pretty funny gags. I also thought the visuals of the tribes and the crystalline structures were pretty cool. Hollow Earth was simple but I got no complaints. The one thing I didn’t like was Mothra, it seemed way too magical and appeared out of thin air. I’m not rating this movie based on how good it is, I just watched this for some silly entertaining fun and that’s exactly what I got!
- vipor9576February 10, 2025It is a fun thing for all family’s to watch and the graphics and details are amazing Godzilla looks great Kong looks great it is my favorite movie and if you watch minus one it is a nice balance of dark and goofy the movie is great and I could watch it anytime
- KennyBarrozFebruary 7, 2025Anger MANAGEMENT at its finest
- Hipster ZOMBIEFebruary 1, 2025Like the latter Toho films that made Godzilla a superhero like figure, GxK The New Empire doesn’t take itself too seriously. The studio knows why we watch these films. The humans take a back seat for all out monster brawls that culminates in the biggest tag team match in kaiju history. It’s fun, it’s dumb, and I loved it!
- Desmond DaleJanuary 24, 2025The complete opposite of Godzilla Minus One, which I actually came to appreciate. This is a monster film that is completely aware of its core audience and everything seems like a vehicle for fun. It's unabashedly stupid and silly and fantastical and the plot is secondary to big classic monster cameos and awesome monster fights. The entire cast is hamming it up and the story has the arc of a bad anime, but the scale and monsters looked as cool as ever. Smoke a bowl and turn off your mind from the terrible genocidal fascism taking over the world and get hyped watching Mini Kong put in the work.
- ScottDecember 26, 2024Please stop giving the Death Note guy work I'm begging you. But also I like that Godzilla continues to prove he's the most versatile character in the industry because in Japan he's a dire warning of the dangers of nuclear proliferation and in America he's a giant cat that punches giant monkey.
