Ghost in the Shell
Directed by Mamoru Oshii- angelm30May 21, 2025A thrilling and narratively complex anime film about the troubles that come with technological advancement, and the potential harm of melding the body with cybernetics. A cautionary tale that in no uncertain terms makes it clear that privacy no longer exists in a technologically advanced society.
- Andre BautzFebruary 19, 2025A very good mix of fantasy and sci-fi. It shows a dystopian, Cyberpunk future. It is visually stunning, fast-paced, but also has quiet moments to linger and enjoy. The story is difficult to follow very quickly in place, but I think that the fact that we are following a special unit also makes it realistic. The picture and sound are still very, very good after all this time.
- Mary Elizabeth EnrileJanuary 12, 2026really great japanese animation. remembered watching ghost in a shell, when i was just a kid,on adult swim cartoon network on cable tv. pretty creepy now that im older, guess Ghost in a shell has more meaning now that im older. really creepy permission to the new age of technology and the rise of artificial intelligence.
- RichardAugust 3, 2025Ghost in the Shell drops you into a rain-soaked, neon-lit future where the lines between human and machine have all but vanished. Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic agent of Section 9, is chasing down a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master, but the deeper she goes, the more she questions her own identity, memories and what it means to have a soul in a digitized world. The film is packed with atmosphere. Neo-Tokyo feels haunting and alive. It’s not just eye candy, though. The story dives deep into philosophical territory: consciousness, self-awareness, and the cost of technological progress. It’s no surprise this film influenced The Matrix, Ex Machina and a whole generation of sci-fi. That said, it’s not for everyone. The dialogue can get dense, and Motoko’s detached persona makes emotional connection tricky on a first watch. Still, I first saw this on a import DVD and it stuck with me. It’s one of those films that lingers, visually, intellectually, emotionally. If you’re into cerebral sci-fi or just want to see where half of modern cyberpunk got its DNA, this is essential viewing.
