Werewolves Within Ratings & Reviews
- ShaydeknightOctober 24, 2025Director Josh Ruben’s Werewolves Within takes the premise of a "whodunnit" in an isolated, snowed-in small town and injects it with a dose of mild horror-comedy. Based on the virtual reality video game, the film proves to be a decent enough way to spend an evening. It's a cute little time waster that manages to be better than one might expect from a video game adaptation. The film's greatest strength lies in its cast. Sam Richardson and Milana Vayntrub are both wonderful, delivering engaging performances as the newly arrived forest ranger Finn Wheeler and the quirky, welcoming mail carrier Cecily Moore, respectively. Their chemistry and good-natured presence provide a steady anchor as the surrounding chaos unfolds. They are supported by an excellent ensemble cast of eccentric townspeople, who embody the various, often comedic, divisions within the community. The film operates on a rather simple, mostly character-driven script. The plot is set up by a nice conflict between the Beaverfield residents: a dispute over a proposed natural gas pipeline that has already frayed nerves before the werewolf attacks begin. This pre-existing antagonism gives the plot somewhere to meander, turning the mystery into a paranoid, small-town squabble. While not the greatest story ever told, this foundation keeps the events moving. In terms of tone, Werewolves Within delivers a mild blend of genres. It's not extremely funny, but it certainly has some nice, clever moments of humour, often driven by the absurd personalities of the residents. Similarly, the horror is restrained. The film is not terribly scary, only featuring a few expected jump scares that don't lean heavily on gore or shocking violence. The lack of excessive sexual content or intense horror suggests the film would be OK for family viewing, provided your family is comfortable with the underlying themes of paranoia and mild monster violence. And a few swear words here and there. Technically, the film features nice, simple camera work that serves the narrative without drawing undue attention to itself. Ultimately, Werewolves Within knows what it is: a light, enjoyable monster mystery that relies on its charismatic leads and their equally talented supporting cast to carry the weight of a modest story. It’s an agreeable, character-focused diversion that clears the low bar of expectations.
- StreetterAugust 31, 2025One of the most enjoyable movies of 2021 in an era of woke crap shoveled upon us.
- jackmeatMay 11, 2025My quick rating - 6.3/10. Well, I will admit my first thought when this started was "Hey, that is Lily from the AT&T commercials." So, I am glad Milana Vayntrub is getting work outside of there, and she is quite good in a quirky role here. Werewolves Within is from Ubisoft, so it is spawned from a game I admittedly never played. The good news is the game-to-movie curse that EWE Boll has driven into the depths of "worst movies ever" has not fallen on this one. He has nothing to do with it, and this movie is very entertaining. The casting is on target for all the strange characters that are presented throughout this mystery movie. Set in a small town, a new ranger (Sam Richardson) arrives to keep the peace, and when he arrives, the whole community is immediately under attack from "something." People start mysteriously dying, and as in this locale, everyone is a suspect and paranoid. The duration of this keeps you wondering who the monster is, if there is even a monster, and if anyone will survive this snowed-in village. Good comedic timing, along with some quality performances, make this one worth a watch all around. Don't expect loads of gore to carry this one, just the sheer amusement will suffice.
