Where to Watch Spring Breakers
- Garrett Wilkins4d agoSpring Breakers understands the intoxicating appeal of girls who seem completely out of reach. Harmony Korine drops his characters into a world fueled by impulse, capturing the chaos surrounding college spring break more convincingly than I expected. And he lets his four female leads weaponize their own sexuality without ever asking the audience to excuse it. Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens shatter the Disney images that had defined their early careers, and neither performance feels apologetic. They become the girls who'd never let you sit with them, yet you'd still do anything they asked. Hudgens, in particular, commits completely to the role, never letting the anxiety she later admitted experiencing during production show on screen. For most of its runtime, I found myself more invested than I expected. A big part of that came from the soundtrack, which blends Cliff Martinez's hypnotic score with some of the defining songs of the early 2010s. Watching it today almost gives the film the feeling of a time capsule, making its reckless world even easier to get lost in. That atmosphere also makes James Franco's Alien such an effective presence once he enters the film. He spends much of the story chasing an image he can never quite possess. The film loses some of its identity once it abruptly introduces a rival gang, steering the story toward a far more conventional crime conflict than the one it had been building. My biggest issue, however, is still the ending, which asks for such a massive suspension of disbelief that it completely broke the spell for me. Despite that, I came away understanding why Spring Breakers became one of A24's earliest cult films. I wouldn't call it a great movie, but it's impossible to accuse it of playing things safe, and I admired how completely it committed to its own unapologetic identity.
- Goode MethydsOctober 20, 2025The fraternal twin of the Bling Ring. If the Bling Ring is about out-of-touch rich teens stealing from even more out-of-touch rich celebrities on the west coast Spring Breakers is it's self aware, broke, gangster sister. While on the surface it comes across as bikini wearing, dumb college girls being manipulated by sketchy drug lord it is so much more than that. These girls are extremely calculated, thoughtful and in control the whole film. The film is like tapping through a college students Snapchat story being soundtracked by Britney Spears. 10/10
- jackmeatAugust 7, 2025My quick rating - 4.4/10. I'm pretty sure I have seen this, but we'll see. And yes, I have. Massive overacting to the point of irritation by James Franco, along with a plot that in no way in the world would happen. Not to this silly and stupid extent. Hopefully, you will do the same thing that Selena Gomez did and get the hell out of the movie as fast as possible. She slides out of this one very early on to never return. She must've seen it was heading down the road to obscure garbage. I knew I was in trouble when the credits began. Girls Gone Wild is all this movie screams out, and that is about the extent of it. This flick caters to teens who believe that drinking, drugging, and screwing are what life is all about (spring break forever). So after the boobs bouncing around wears off, it attempts to have a plot in between music video cut scenes. That is all this was, a long-ass, pathetic music video. Some really annoying chicks rob a restaurant for cash to go to spring break. So they go, party it up, get into trouble, and get bailed out by some thug named "Alien". Yep, they somehow drugged Franco to take part in this movie. Granted, he was the only part worth seeing at all (you can get GGW movies at your leisure). Well, of course, the spring break doesn't last forever as reality starts to creep in and is shown off in a very anti-climactic ending. So there really isn't much to go into, just overall repetitive scenes and music. It's a lame attempt at drama here and there. Without Franco, much worse!
