It's hard to describe the experience of watching this film. It's harrowing, tense, and shell-shocking. Christopher Nolan has put the audience on the beaches of Dunkirk, on the fishing boats, and into the spitfires during the greatest evacuation of World War II. Only the most talented directors can sustain tension. An audience cannot be stressed for two hours unless the story being told is engrossing. It must capture the audience. Dunkirk needs almost no exposition - it is told by a single piece of paper. From there, the film explodes. Then, the tension and suspense begin and do not leave you until the film ends.

Stupendous cast to aid Nolan tell the story of the brave people who helped save thousands at Dunkirk, I'm sure it only tells a part of the story. Nolan's brilliant cinematography was epic throughout with a hunting soundtrack at times. Great DTS HD MA audio track to accompany the HDR10. The intensity of the silence at times adds a great deal to the atmosphere. That last 30 minutes or so was stomach churing

An incredibly impressive war film. The use of extremely long single-camera takes keeps you engaged with the characters, the distance they must travel, and the ticking-clock looming over them; These long single-camera takes also really amplify the anxiety & tension of the constant horrors and ever-present life-threatening dangers of the battlefield.

Why can't modern movies have a plot? Modern movies go like this... we have $50 CGI budget... ok, lets spend first hour showing computer animated misery; lets not develop any of our characters; CGI will make the movie great; news flash... no it won't. This movie was dead on arrival.

7/10. Not Nolans best work but still a great watch. Pros and cons below. Pros: - The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is amazing!! - Awsome coloring and visuals. - Real historical and functional aircrafts and ships. - Great acting Cons: - Too short for a war movie - Few historical inaccuracies - Story might be too confusing on first watch - Almost no ground fights. Just survival. - No battle of Dunkirk?!?! - How exactly was the perimeter on the beach held? No scenes on this whatsoever.

Christopher Nolan is one of the absolute best, and perhaps my favorite, directors working today, so Dunkirk feels almost tailor-made to scratch every filmmaking itch I have. Hoyte van Hoytema’s breathtaking IMAX cinematography gives the film an incredible sense of scale, while Nolan’s relentless cross-cutting between land, sea, and air keeps that scale in constant motion. The practical stunts and roaring Spitfires make the tension feel immediate rather than manufactured. Hans Zimmer’s score might be the film’s most effective weapon, built around the ticking of Nolan’s own pocket watch and turning that sound into an almost unbearable pulse. It is a masterclass in controlling tension, with the technical craft constantly pushing the audience forward.

The phenomenal ensemble keeps that intensity alive, from Tom Hardy’s stoic cockpit grit to Cillian Murphy, one of my favorite actors, giving a harrowing performance as a shell-shocked survivor. A young Barry Keoghan also makes a quiet but devastating impression. My one reservation is that Nolan’s macro-focused approach can create an emotional distance that makes some of the characters feel more like pieces within the larger machine than fully developed people. That keeps it from hitting me quite as deeply as his very best work, but the sheer sensory mastery is difficult to deny. Dunkirk remains a towering war film, built with such confidence that it becomes another reminder of why Nolan operates in a league of his own.

Really impressive war movie. The sound design is incredible, the cinematography is beautiful, and the tension just keeps building. I also like that it doesn’t turn everything into some big heroic story. It feels chaotic, desperate and pretty damn intense, and the practical effects make a lot of it feel more real. The way the different timelines come together works really well, although it can be a little confusing at first. The biggest downside for me is that there isn’t much character development, so it’s harder to get emotionally attached to anyone. Still, the atmosphere and tension more than make up for it. Not Nolan’s best, but definitely one of the better war movies I’ve seen.

Dunkirk released in 2017 and it STILL looks amazing! The cinematography is stunning. Some of these shots are so gorgeous despite the depressing nature of what you are watching. The director really did stunningly beautiful work here. The acting is also really well done. The broad span of acting talent in this film gave it their all. My only concern is that points of view change and time frames change from preset to past and you don’t always know who you’re looking at or when. It’s a lot of chaos and hard to follow what is happening at times or who you are looking at. That said, I think the cinematography and acting make this film a must watch, despite the lack of orientation in time and viewpoint.

Dunkirk is a truly riveting movie that locks you in the soldiers helmet for 1 Hour and 40 Minutes. Positives: - The movie is extremely well made, well directed, well shot, well edited, and well paced - The cinematography is gorgeous in this film - The practical explosions look great - The costumes look good - The score is great and really intense - The performances are really good - The action sequences are truly great here and very intense - The movie overall is very riveting and you feel that here Negatives: - It’s hard to care about the characters when there is no character development - The movie should have been way longer it’s a very rushed movie - I also found the movie to be quite boring and uninteresting Overall Dunkirk is a good movie but one of Nolan’s weaker entrys.

Chronology is weird. Beach has no craters and they’re standing there for days on end with no food, water or bathroom facilities? Stunningly boring. Leaves out a lot of important details considering it’s based on true events. For me this is the worst Nolan film I’ve watched.

A spectacular show. Dunkirk, or the great escape - a dramatic struggle for survival in a moving cinematographic tribute to the victims.
