With a straightforward premise, the journey and the ultimate end can usually be easy to predict. But Haunt is a refreshing and polished take on the sinister haunted house movie.
Katie Stevens does a good job leading this cast, while Lauryn McClain and Andrew Lewis Caldwell were both solid. This is not an acting or narrative tour de force, but it balances a well-shot and well-set movie with enough body horror to make you cringe. The jump scares were well placed and unexpected, while the minor twists and turns were executed well, too.
This movie may seem tame to the more indoctrinated, but it has aspects that make it approachable and easy to watch for those trying to segue into something more "extreme" on the horror movie scale.
The ending lands on both feet, wrapping up the impactful storylines in a neat bow and leaving little room for ambiguity. While individual performances and some shallow character aspects did make me hesitate, no one is watching this movie for top-tier acting or deep storylines. This is a solid movie for the genre, and one that I ultimately feel comfortable suggesting to my friends and others.
