- ReviewedHeads of StateAugust 17, 2025This movie is actually pretty solid. It isn't great, but it's a fun enough watch. The characters are the best part, especially the dynamic and humor of John Cena and Idris Elba's characters. The jokes in general are pretty funny. The movie is also well-paced and not boring. Action sequences are solid and engaging, again, nothing particularly great, but entertaining enough. The story is the worst part, being pretty cliche and generic, but it doesn't detract from the rest of the movie that much. The best part was definitely Jack Quaid's character, he stole the spotlight in the limited screentime he had. Kind of makes you wish you were watching Novocaine instead, but Heads of State is still good. Overall, I don't have much more to say about it, but I recommend it for a fun time. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars, or 7/10.
- Reviewed28 Years LaterAugust 17, 2025I have a pretty bad history with these films. I saw part of 28 Days Later, and, while it seemed good, I thought the visual quality of the film was pretty bad, so I ended up dropping it. I later tried with 28 Weeks, which looked better, and has one of my favorite movie intro scenes of all time, but then the movie takes a hard nosedive after (Spoilers) the main character, played by the excellent Robert Carlyle, is killed off. I also dropped out of that one. You would think I'd have adjusted my expectations for this one, but for some reason I thought it might actually be great. The bone tower looked really cool in the trailers, and 28 Years just sounds pretty crazy. Judging by my rating of the movie, it's evident I was unable to enjoy it much. I hardly liked anything in the movie, other than the acting performances being good, and one emotional moment which is good, in a vacuum. I don't really like anything else. The pacing is very bad, I was just so bored for the majority of the movie, which is probably the biggest sin a zombie movie can make. I've heard people say the first half is intense and amazing, and then it loses steam in the second half. But to be honest, I can't entirely agree. I thought the first half wasn't much better than the second. Pacing still isn't great, and while there are a few decent moments with zombie variants, it unfortunately comes at the cost of the story. The story in this movie is overall not good, very shallow, generic, and boring. But in the first half it was at its worst, since the movie was totally aimless. In the second half, the story begins to develop a bit, but in the end it's still super generic. Usually movies with such a simple story make up for it with good action and fun factor. But somehow this movie also fails at that. The action is so forgettable and sparse. Having zombie variants is a cool concept that maybe worked in the first half, but goes downhill as soon as you see what Alphas look like. What a hideous design. And not even in a cool, creepy way, it's just awful. And of course, this is all without even mentioning the ending. I'm personally not going to hate on it too much, since I find it to be one of the "least worst" things about the movie. But it's still pretty questionable, and it all depends on how they handle it on the sequel, which I doubt I will watch, since it'll probably also fail at all the other important things a good movie needs to have. Overall, 28 Years Later is kind of a nothing burger. I didn't get anything out of it, and it was totally forgettable for the most part. I don't think it can quite be called a bad movie despite all my criticisms, since the performances are still good, the characters are solid for the most part, the world is at least a bit interesting, that one emotional moment is pretty decent (you'll know when you get to it), and the first half was pretty ok. But I still can't bring myself to wholeheartedly recommend it. I give 28 Years Later 2.5 out of 5 stars, or 5/10.
- ReviewedSpeedAugust 16, 2025So, the other day I decided to rewatch Speed for the first time in quite a long while actually. I'm usually not a big fan of most "classics" (which I define as pre-2000 movies) but this one holds up really well. The pacing is surprisingly good for a movie of its time, most older films are really slow in terms of pacing, but Speed manages the pacing almost perfectly. It never feels boring, right from the get go they throw in an intense sequence, and the intensity is pretty continuous up until the very end. Some people might be against that, since that means the story is pretty simplistic as a result, but I think it works well for this kind of film. Characters are likable, and the villain was actually pretty solid and well portrayed by Denis Hopper. I personally don't have a problem with the third act, some people say it was tagged on and the movie should've ended earlier, but I think that would've been kind of abrupt, and the relationship between the two leads would have felt rushed. I think having this sort of "final showdown" with the villain is appropriate and pretty satisfying. I overall don't really have any meaningful issues with the movie, it's really well paced, with good action, characters, villain, and a solid enough story. The only real nitpick I can come up with is the final line of Sandra Bullock's character. I thought the entire thing with "relationships that stem from intense circumstances don't last" should've been dropped entirely, but it's not a major issue. The only reason I dont give this 5/5 stars is because, even if the movie doesn't have any major issues, I can't quite say I like it more than all the movies I've rated as 4.5/5 stars. Hence why it earns that rating. It's still a blast and an awesome movie that's definitely worth watching.
- ReviewedDeath of a UnicornAugust 10, 2025So, Death of a Unicorn... I thought the movie was fine. The story is surprisingly the best part, or at least the story in the first 2/3rds. I like how it plays with the theme of "Messing with the unknown" and it obviously backfiring in the end. The problem is that this movie doesn't really know what it wants to be. If you look at it from the point of view of a story, then you'll be disappointed because, while there are some interesting elements and ideas, the third act just throws it all away in favor of typical cliches, the movie gets a lot dumber and the story really falls off. If you see it as a dumb horror movie with Killer Unicorns, then you'll probably also be disappointed, since the first 2/3rds barely have any action or killer unicorns, and it is pretty slow paced. It doesn't fully succeed at either, even though the pieces for something good are there. The other problem is the characters, who are pretty forgettable, especially the main leads played by Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd. The rich family are better characters, but they are still pretty underutilized, and instead of focusing on their story, we focus too much on Jenna and Rudd's characters, who are unfortunately very one-note and boring. Overall, I still give it a positive score because there were elements I liked, I just feel like the pacing was a bit too slow, some of the story elements could've been expanded on further, and the third act should be less safe and cliched. I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars, or 6.5-7/10, since it's still a pretty enjoyable time.
- ReviewedA Minecraft MovieJuly 24, 2025This movie is exactly what you expect, a dumb but fun adventure in the blocky world of Minecraft. Personally I don't find it worthy of the negative reviews, while the story and writing are most certainly not good, the movie is still very fun, it has good pacing, surprisingly solid action(especially in the third act), good humor (partially due to the memes, but also some genuinely good comedy in my opinion) and funny albeit generic characters. I love seeing the world of Minecraft in the big screen, I grew up with the game and still very much love it to this day. The visuals on the Minecraft elements are really good, though the humans stand out like a bit of a sore thumb. In terms of pure enjoyability, this movie is an 8/10 or so, but factoring in the story and writing, I'll give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars, or 7/10
