The Passage had enormous potential, especially for viewers familiar with the books. A friend introduced me to the trilogy, and I was immediately hooked by its ambitious, multi-generational take on vampirism—something far richer and more complex than typical vampire fiction. So when a TV adaptation was announced, I was genuinely excited. However, one of the novel’s greatest strengths—the bold time jumps—was abandoned in favour of a traditional, linear structure. On television, that slow unfolding drained much of the momentum. The time jumps in the books kept me constantly guessing about the characters’ fates and how the world had changed. Keeping that structure, much like The Witcher’s first-season approach, could have made the show uniquely compelling. After all, vampires live a long time; watching the world shift across generations would have been fascinating. Instead, the narrative in the series revealed itself too slowly, losing viewer engagement. The Passage had great ingredients, but sadly never embraced the storytelling power that made the novels unforgettable.
