- Callum21h ago⭐⭐⭐½ (out of 5) Avatar: The Last Airbender – A world divided by elements, united by stunning visuals and young promise. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” brings the beloved animated epic into live action, and for once, it doesn’t feel like a hollow imitation. The story of a young hero destined to restore balance to a fractured world still shines — a timeless tale of elemental power, destiny, and redemption. Even without seeing the original cartoon, it’s easy to feel the depth of its mythology. The visual effects are polished and natural, with fire, water, air, and earth bending that looks tactile and alive rather than overproduced. The show also walks a delicate line between Western cinematic storytelling and the unmistakable Japanese-inspired roots of its world — you can feel both influences in every frame, from costume to choreography. What truly benefits the series is time — the space to let its characters breathe and grow. Where the much-maligned film sprinted through the plot like a bending battle on fast-forward, this adaptation lingers, giving moments weight and personalities texture. The young cast, though still finding their rhythm, already show sparks of real talent that make them worth watching as they mature into their roles. It may not reach full spiritual enlightenment, but it’s a heartfelt and beautifully crafted journey that honours the legend it comes from — and, most importantly, invites new fans to believe in balance once more.
- Tiffie StarchildAugust 1, 2025Since recent announcements have ATLA on a lot of people’s minds: Look, this show is not trying to recreate the original animated series. It’s a retelling, so it’s going to be different in some significant ways. I think it’s important for fans of the OG show to keep that in mind because some of the differences can be jarring. I didn’t particularly care for some of the character changes (the most egregious one was definitely King Bumi - my god), and they did some big remixing to fit what was originally a 20-episode season into just 8 episodes. That being said, I still enjoyed seeing a cartoon that I love be brought to life. Moving forward with seasons 2 & 3, I hope that they’re able to slow down the pacing a bit, because the story matters so much. I also hope that the wig budget got a serious increase 🫣
