The daughter of the King of Provence, blind from birth, Rene, thanks to her father's efforts, does not know about her illness. She is engaged to Robert, Duke of Burgundy. The father hopes to restore his daughter's sight before the wedding, with the help of a Moorish doctor. Robert and his friend, Gottfried Vaudemont, Count of Issudune, Champagne, Clairvaux and Montargis, arrive at the castle. Robert is in love with the Countess of Lorraine Matilda and wants to ask King René to return his word to him.
