Wonka Ratings & Reviews
- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025Paul King has captured the whimsy and wonder worthy of Wilder's Willy Wonka. Fresh off the near universally acclaimed Paddington films, and re-teaming on the script with Paddington 2 collaborator Simon Farnaby, King has once again created a film that feels wholesome, funny, and magically entertaining for the entire family. For some reason the marketing doesn’t want you to know this, but Wonka is a full-on song-and-dance musical with new original songs and choreographed musical numbers. Wonka is surprisingly funny, too, thanks in large part to the supporting cast (Colman, Lane, Key, Rothwell, Grant, Carter, Atkinson, et al.)…. with so many winks and nods to Wilder’s Wonka without it feeling like overt fan service. Can’t wait to see again with my children.

- 匚卂尺ㄥFebruary 12, 2025I’m old enough to remember the original we watched every year at Christmas and Johnny Depp made a fun Wonka. This prequel is hilarious, it’s fun with some fantastic actors. The songs are catchy and hilarious. Hugh Grant is so good in it, it’s beyond belief.
- VarunOctober 19, 2024An acceptable film that plays it too safe. Wonka is too positively whimsical, and when this movie is touting itself as a prequel, they should’ve written a more unhinged version of him. Timothée Chalamet is fine in the role but isn’t exactly captivating. The movie is way too gray for a Willy Wonka film, there’s very few scenes that are filled with colour so it’s missing a lot of magic which kills the desire to be transported into the world. The Oompa Loompa did not work for me either and Hugh Grant admitted and even looks like he didn’t enjoy playing the character. Most of the musicals were smartly written and enjoyable, some were a miss, but Chalemet’s voice isn’t powerful enough to entrance you. All the other actors did a great job portraying their characters. This movie has a decent and pleasant story you could watch with the kids but nothing special to write home about. There was one final scene of Wonka reading a short and simple message from his mom that did almost bring a tear to my eye.
- RyezooFebruary 4, 2025I was happily surprised on how great this was! Timothy killed it. The sets, the songs, and the story loved it. The only thing that stopped this from being amazing was the third act was noticeably weaker than the first two, but they absolutely nailed the ending! Lastly Hugh Grant had me laughing nonstop. I know he hated filming that role, atleast it was for a great movie.
- Steve MooreJanuary 12, 2025Such a great movie. Me and Brooke have seen it 6 times now.
- SaraJanuary 6, 2025Far away enough from the original to be its own thing and with that in mind it’s a good watch.
