Windfall Ratings & Reviews
Eldon McGuinness

Once the opening credits start, you can tell this is going to be a...different experience. The opening credits feel very Hitchcockesque, from the rolling credit on a landscape to a panning action that concludes it. Overall, the movie is very suspenseful, with the resolution kept just out of reach by events that, at times, border on just absurd. Some tones of socioeconomic and privilege are scratched upon and in some ways play a factor into what is a surprise twist in the end. The only downside to the movie is that it is a bit slow at times and the characters do lack fleshing out.

It should be commended, however, for making its flawless setting as claustrophobic for us as it is for the three characters.
Screen Rant

Windfall is a modest thriller that thrives on excellent performances from its cast, a confident director at the helm & a score that keeps up momentum.

While there's undoubtedly a good idea at the heart of "Windfall" a billionaire so used to getting his way that he even tries to negotiate with a burglar it, unfortunately, results in a film void of any thrills until its last third.

Theres at least one great performance in here, and the whole venture clocks in at a blissfully brief 90 minutes or so.

Plemons, Collins, and Segel elevate this basic story beyond more than just a generic noir homage, but itll likely leave the audience like Nobody: willing to accept less when they should be asking for more.

Its rare for a film to kidnap our attention from the start and hold us captive until the end. Thats the achievement of Windfall," a compelling combo of Alfred Hitchcock and Michael Haneke in all of the best ways, including a distinct "Vertigo" score.

Windfall's surface pleasures, however, are undeniably satisfying, even as the calories ultimately prove a bit empty.

WINDFALL isnt really as good as a Hitchcock classic, though the story has just enough intrigue to hold your attention.

Ill give the story props for originality, including the fact that none of the characters have names, but do not use this film as a lesson in effective negotiating.

Windfall has a difficult time landing on the right tone or getting a bead on its characters.
Nightmarish Conjurings

A delightful slow burn cat and mouse game, WINDFALL breathes fresh air into the familiar. Jesse Plemons, Jason Segel, and Lily Collins are delightful.

A well-done, stripped-down thriller.
Chicago Sun-Times
Richard Roeper
Sometimes tense, often comically absurd and always engrossing...
Los Angeles Times

"Windfall" is, throughout, a top-notch actors' showcase.
Detroit News
Adam Graham
It hangs on a character turn that doesn't feel earned, and despite solid performances from its small cast, ends up feeling slight.
Entertainment Weekly
Leah Greenblatt
An itchy, underdeveloped chamber piece whose sour tone aims for something between social satire and neo-noir thriller, but lands mostly on real estate porn.
Variety
Guy Lodge
Victim-aggressor dynamics aren't all they initially seem in this lean, mean domestic hostage story from director Charlie McDowell and 'Se7en' writer Andrew Kevin Walker.
The Hollywood Reporter
David Rooney
This is a sharply directed and well-acted project that makes a virtue of its modest concept.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
In the end, about the only thing that could have saved "Windfall" was a really good ending. But what we get is something gimmicky that makes no psychological sense and that the actors cannot make work.
