Tropic Thunder Ratings & Reviews
- Manuel FrangisApril 13, 2025I just watched Tropic Thunder, and I give it 5 out of 5 stars. This is one of the wildest, most over the top comedies ever made, and it still holds up as one of the funniest movies I have seen. It is insane, loud, chaotic, and totally ridiculous—but that is exactly what makes it work so well. The movie knows how crazy it is and leans into it all the way. There is nothing subtle about it, and honestly, that is the point. The story follows a group of out of touch actors trying to make a war movie, but everything goes off the rails fast. What starts as a big Hollywood production turns into something way more real than they signed up for. The whole thing is packed with satire, jabs at the film industry, and characters who are so clueless that you cannot help but laugh at every bad decision they make. Ben Stiller directed the movie and stars as the lead actor who takes himself way too seriously. He is great in the role, and his performance is totally committed. You can tell he knew exactly what kind of movie he was making, and he goes all in. Jack Black is also hilarious, playing a totally unhinged version of a comedian stuck in the jungle with no control over anything. He is loud, dramatic, and his timing is perfect. But the real standout is Robert Downey Jr. His character is one of the most controversial parts of the movie, but it is also where a lot of the sharpest satire comes from. The way he plays it is so over the top and absurd that it is clearly calling out how far actors will go to win awards or be seen as “serious.” It is a wild performance, but it is done with so much purpose and confidence that it works. He steals every scene he is in. The supporting cast is great too. There are so many side characters that make the whole movie even better. Brandon T. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Nick Nolte, and especially Tom Cruise, who shows up in one of the most unexpected and hilarious roles I have ever seen. His character is completely out of control, and every second he is on screen is pure chaos. The movie’s sense of humor is definitely not for everyone. It pushes boundaries and is very aware that it is doing so. But if you get what it is going for, it is honestly genius. It is not just being outrageous for no reason. It is using that shock value to make fun of everything from actors to studios to how Hollywood works behind the scenes. The action scenes are also surprisingly good. For a comedy, the explosions, gunfights, and jungle settings are filmed like a real war movie. The fact that the production looks this good just makes the comedy hit even harder. I give Tropic Thunder 5 out of 5 stars because it is bold, hilarious, and completely unlike any other comedy. It is not afraid to be offensive, but it also has something to say underneath all the insanity. Overall Tropic Thunder is a chaotic, no-holds-barred comedy that somehow gets everything right. It is loud, clever, and one of those movies you will keep quoting for years. I loved every second of it.
- rayzrsharp4d agoProbably the funniest movie ever next to Taladega Nights and Old School. I'll be watching it again soon for more good laughs!
- PatrikStarJune 30, 2025Need more Tom Cruise dancing! Can’t wait for him to make more movies like this
- mickerdooJuly 25, 2025Despite a couple moments that made me laugh out loud and a really deep cast, I just didn't really like this one. Guess they went too simple.
- wf625June 30, 2025I do like this movie, but I do think it’s really overrated
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025Introduced this to our kids last night. They really like Tom Cruise, Jack Black, RDJ, even Brandon T. Jackson (they actually really like those Percy Jackson films). I suppose I had forgotten about how much sexual and drug innuendo there was in this. Oops. We were kind of just looking for an action comedy. They’re kind of used to it all by now though. Still a really funny watch. I still think the funniest part is when Jay Baruchel is droning on about the Blu-ray vs HDDVD war, and RDJ turns around and says angrily “You were talking to me that whole time!”
- ayayronApril 6, 2025Casting RDJ in blackface was a wild move
- Tiago NazarethApril 13, 2025Great action, great dialogue, great acting, great music and great humor. The humour doesn't shy away from what is deemed to be politically incorrect nowadays but looking past all that it's a very funny film. This movie barks at and pokes at and makes fun of every genre, class, society, movie, race, etc. It's fantastic and gets better every watch. Probably because these jokes wouldn't fly today 17 years later. The stellar ensemble cast is amazing! Robert Downey Jr and Tom Cruise were both comedic gold! Both were stand out performances and some of the most memorable scenes from the movie. Almost every single scene has a quotable line. The action is very well done and the story's so wonderfully over the top. I think the biggest win is how well it has aged in my opinion. This is a legendary comedy which will be remembered for years. You will be kept laughing the entire time, and the movie will just keep getting better. This is a great watch and definitely worth your time
- RyezooFebruary 14, 2025So many hilarious moments! The cast is stacked and I loved re-seeing Tom Cruise being a thick boy. The director cut I watched definitely had pacing problems but the funny moments saved the 4 star rating!
