The Day of the Jackal Ratings & Reviews
Richard Davis
October 7, 2025
One of the greatest political thrillers ever made. Forget other reviews that talk about 'this is slow-paced for the first half'. The whole point of the film is to try and offer an insight into how a contract killer goes about their business. Slow. Patient. Methodical. Detailed. One of the key reasons why this film is so good is because of the level of detail and thought that is shared with the viewer. You become completely immersed in what the Jackal is doing and how he's doing it. Everything that he's doing is completely believable, it's all completely replicable, and nothing is beyond realism or possibility. As a 70's film, there is almost zero FX. Everything was done for real and was clearly filmed in and around real French crowds and events, which brings an additional layer of cool and realism that you simply can't replicate. It feels so real. This is a film that should be on everyone's bucket list.

It is the sustained gentleness of Fred Zinnemann's professional temperament that makes the picture a clockwork amusement to watch.

Keith Uhlich
Possesses a tonal coldness that aligns viewers with the assassin's reptilian machinations. -Guest post by Michael Joshua Rowin

William B. Collins
As the tension rises, you feel terribly helpless. You just have to sit there and let it happen.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Joe Pollack
Director Fred Zinnemann has provided a splendid film of thrilling, tense entertainment in The Day of the Jackal.
Film Frenzy
Matt Brunson
Director Fred Zinnemann, scripter Kenneth Ross, and editor Ralph Kemplen (earning this film's sole Oscar nomination) all deserve high marks.
TIME Magazine
Richard Schickel
In short, as so often happens, a second-rate fiction has been transformed into a first-rate screen entertainment.

This is not a bad movie, it races by and entertains, after a fashion. It simply is not as good as it should have been.
Chicago Reader
Don Druker
It's a polished and exciting thriller, mercifully unburdened with heavy political/philosophical digressions.
TV Guide
TV Guide Staff
A taut, suspenseful, and fascinating political thriller.
Variety
Variety Staff
The major asset of the film is that it succeeds in maintaining interest and suspense despite obvious viewer foreknowledge of the outcome.
EmanuelLevy.Com
Emanuel Levy
Like all Zinnemann's work, this meticulously crafted political thriller is involving but not exciting due to his detached perspective and the fact that we know the outcome, that De Gaulle wasn't assassinated, but it's cast with Europe's best actors.
Lawrence Journal-World
Jon Niccum
Great assassination-based thriller
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
I wasn't prepared for how good it really is: it's not just a suspense classic, but a beautifully executed example of filmmaking.
Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Dennis Schwartz
An engrossing film about a terrorist.
Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN)
Bob Bloom
A taut, suspenseful thriller that is as exciting as the first time you saw it. Fox is wonderful as the assassin; a great cat-and-mouse feature.
Filmcritic.com
Christopher Null
Delightfully intelligent and often irreverant, it's a good yarn and a good thriller to boot.
New York Times
Vincent Canby
The details are minutely observed and, to me, just a bit boring.
