Where to Watch The Cell
- A beautifully artistic film that not only weaves an interesting tale of a serial killer, but creates a dream world so accurately represented. The disjointed feeling of shifting between locations, being unable to scream, and the general sense of helplessness that usually accompanies a nightmare are all present. D'Onofrio was amazing as usual. Highly recommend.
- I hadn’t seen this since I watched it in the theater. I really loved this though. Some of the visuals when they’re inside Stargher’s head are gorgeously nightmarish. When Stargher had the tapestries wrapped around the walls connected to his back, the vivisected horse, Stargher’s black cloak materializing in the pool…..literally every scene in Stargher’s head is visually arresting in some form. It’s also a pretty clever Sci-fi concept fused with a police - serial killer drama. This would probably be a 5 star film if it had nailed the cat and mouse detective drama a bit better. I would say I would love to see a sequel to this, but apparently they did….and it looks terrible. So maybe not. Loved this though .
- Trippy pre-Inception mind-dive thriller. Jenny from the block plays the child psychologist who literally goes inside the comatose killer's subconscious to find his last victim before she dies. Vince Vaughn is solid as the FBI agent who is along for the ride. Tarsem Singh directs it like a moving art exhibit, all surreal, real nightmare-logic imagery, religious iconography, and body horror. Its very much a product of its era, very 2000, glossy, grim, unapologetically weird. But the visual imagination still holds up. Style over substance in places, but when the style is this committed, it doesn't matter. Definitely one for "The Collection".
