Ocean’s 8 is the fourth movie in the franchise, and unfortunately, it feels less like a natural continuation of what made the original trilogy entertaining and more like Hollywood decided the franchise needed an all-female reboot simply because it could. The problem isn’t that the cast is female—the problem is that the movie seems to think putting eight women in the same movie is enough to make an entertaining Ocean’s film. It isn’t. The original Ocean’s movies worked because of their chemistry, clever dialogue, charisma, pacing, and the feeling that you were watching a group of incredibly confident criminals execute an elaborate plan. Ocean’s 8 takes that basic formula and strips away much of what made it enjoyable. Instead of feeling slick and clever, the movie feels manufactured and surprisingly lifeless. The cast is enormous, but the characters are painfully thin. We’re introduced to one specialist after another, essentially being told what each person is supposed to do rather than being given compelling characters worth caring about. They’re defined by their jobs instead of their personalities. Even with performers like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, and Awkwafina, the movie struggles to generate the chemistry and energy you’d expect from an ensemble this talented. And then there’s the heist itself. For an Ocean’s movie, the actual robbery should be the best part. It should make you wonder how they’re going to pull it off. There should be tension, surprises, clever twists, and moments where you genuinely think the entire plan is about to fall apart. Instead, Ocean’s 8 frequently feels like everything is going exactly according to plan because the movie doesn’t seem particularly interested in creating suspense. Whenever there is a potential problem, it’s often resolved almost immediately. That removes one of the biggest reasons to watch a heist movie in the first place: the uncertainty of whether the criminals are actually going to get away with it. What makes this even more frustrating is that the movie had every opportunity to be great. You’ve got a huge cast. You’ve got a famous franchise. You’ve got the Met Gala as the setting. You’ve got an elaborate robbery. You’ve got New York City. You’ve got Hollywood celebrities everywhere. And somehow the end result is boring. That’s an impressive achievement in itself. The movie also spends a considerable amount of time reminding the audience that this is an all-woman crew. That could have worked if it had simply been part of the story, but instead it sometimes feels like the gender swap itself is being presented as the selling point. That’s perfectly fine as an idea, but the movie still has to be good. Being different doesn’t automatically make something better. And that’s where Ocean’s 8 completely loses me. I don’t care whether the criminals are men, women, Martians, or eight highly trained golden retrievers. Give me a good heist. Give me characters I actually enjoy watching. Give me clever writing. Give me twists that aren’t obvious. Give me a reason to care whether they succeed. Instead, I got a movie that feels like a glossy remake of a movie I already watched—and a much better one. The original Ocean’s Eleven had swagger. It had personality. The cast felt like they were having fun together, and that chemistry was a huge part of the movie’s appeal. Ocean’s 8 has talented performers, but the ensemble never produces that same effortless feeling. Hollywood had the chance to take the Ocean’s formula and create something genuinely fresh. Instead, they swapped the cast, changed the target, added a bunch of celebrity cameos, threw everyone into designer clothes, and apparently decided that would be enough. It wasn’t. The movie isn’t clever enough to be a great heist film, funny enough to be a great comedy, exciting enough to be a great thriller, or memorable enough to justify its existence as another entry in the franchise. It’s just… there. And honestly, that’s almost worse than making an outright terrible movie. At least a spectacularly bad movie can be entertaining because of how bad it is. Ocean’s 8 is mostly just forgettable. The original Ocean’s movies had charm, style, chemistry, and genuine entertainment value. Ocean’s 8 feels like a corporate attempt to repackage those ingredients for a new audience without understanding what actually made the originals work. You can change the cast. You can change the characters. You can change the target. But if you take away the charm, wit, suspense, and chemistry, you don’t have another great Ocean’s movie—you just have another heist movie wearing the Ocean’s name. ½/5 stars.

- Zokkiie2026年2月28日It’s a mixed bag. Totally lacks the energy and swagger of the original films — the vibe just isn’t there. The cast is fun, and the heist itself is clever enough to keep things moving, but it never really hits any big highs. The set pieces are clean and there are a few genuinely funny moments, though some characters barely get a chance to do much. It’s satisfying enough by the end, but nothing that sticks with you afterward. All told, it’s a perfectly decent heist movie — light, easy to watch, and enjoyable if you’re just looking for something fun without any fireworks.

Just kind of wish Soderbergh had directed this and maybe held off on relinquishing directing duties until Ocean’s Nine and Ocean’s Ten. I’ll still cross my fingers and hope those get made at some point. Can’t have enough star studded heist movies in my opinion.
- A very entertaining Saturday afternoon movie that tries to stay in line with the other Ocean’s flicks but skids a bit on the road to success. Still, this group of women works well together and the chemistry between Blanchett and Bullock is really enjoyable. There are hints at a sequel, perhaps blended with the rest of the Oceans, that to me sounds like it could be extremely funny, in a chaotic way. For now enjoy the 8 you’ll have a good time!
