In this classic German thriller, Hans Beckert, a serial killer who preys on children, becomes the focus of a massive Berlin police manhunt. Beckert's heinous crimes are so repellant and disruptive to city life that he is even targeted by others in the seedy underworld network. With both cops and criminals in pursuit, the murderer soon realizes that people are on his trail, sending him into a tense, panicked attempt to escape justice.

An intriguing watch that flicks a switch to become something that's vital to see. The final scene had my mouth gaped open throughout. Rarely have I seen something so powerful and ripe for debate. I can't shake the sight of Peter Lorre's eyes and sweat. "I haven't any control over this evil thing that's inside of me! The fire, the voices, the torment!” Highly recommended.

Fritz Lang's first sound film is the Rosetta Stone for thrillers, a masterpiece of German expressionism, of special interest since the film is a product of pre-fascist Germany

I can see the brilliance. Unfortunately, I just don't appreciate it the way many seem to. I struggled watching this. It took several viewings over many days to complete it. I had a hard time focusing and giving it the necessary attention. That was a me issue of not a movie issue. There is much to love...but it isn't perfect.

Interesting as a social documentary and an excellent example of a watchable film from 1932. I'm sure I don't know enough to critique the technicalities so I'll leave it there.
