Ghost in the Shell 2.0 Ratings & Reviews
- RichyEAugust 3, 2025Watched the remaster, polished, yes. But emotionally? Still chasing the ghost of 1995. Set in 2029, this cyberpunk classic follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetically enhanced agent of Section 9, as she hunts down the elusive hacker known as the Puppet Master. The 2.0 version updates the original with 3D animation in select scenes and a re recorded 6.1 surround mix, technically slick, but artistically divisive. The good? The soundscape is immersive, the philosophical tone still hits hard and the voice cast, Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Otsuka, Koichi Yamadera returns with gravitas. The cyberpunk aesthetic remains iconic: noir cityscapes, existential dread and digital ghosts in the machine. The not so good? The CGI inserts clash with the original hand drawn beauty, creating visual whiplash. Some scenes lose their emotional warmth and longtime fans argue the soul of the film got a bit sterilized in the upgrade. Still worth watching, especially if you're new to the franchise. But if you grew up with the 1995 version, this one feels like a highres echo of something deeper.
- Lucas WatsonJune 21, 2025Same with a different feel. Good as a stand alone.
- Freddie RodriguezFebruary 19, 2025The 3D scenes haven't aged well and I find uncomfortable to watch these scenes inserted into the traditional animation sequence. I believe this would be much better as a HD 16:9 remaster of the original.
