Fail Safe Ratings & Reviews
- flavo43November 28, 2025Fail Safe is one of the most gripping and sobering nuclear-war dramas ever made. Released in 1964, it presents a terrifyingly plausible scenario: an accidental signal sends a U.S. bomber group toward Moscow with orders to strike, triggering a global crisis that no one can stop. In a desperate attempt to prevent full-scale Armageddon, the United States agrees to sacrifice one of its own cities—an unthinkable decision that leads to profound personal tragedy for those involved. The film is stark, tense, and claustrophobic, unfolding almost like a stage play as leaders, soldiers, and families grapple with the consequences of failure in the nuclear command system. It raises sharp questions about deterrence, automation, human error, and the illusion of control in an age of doomsday weapons. While Fail Safe didn’t perform as well at the box office—largely overshadowed by Dr. Strangelove, which explored similar themes in satirical form—it remains a haunting, powerful classic.
- Jonathon PackNovember 15, 2025There are mostly just people in rooms talking but this is incredibly stressful and is a film I think I'm going to be pondering and referencing often for a long time.
- Michael SurberOctober 23, 2025A simply chilling cold war epic film. The boldest "what if" tale ever. An all star cast that starts with Henry Fonda at the top. Just watch it.
- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025Really loved this. Cold War thriller that imagines a scenario where the fail safe mechanisms of nuclear warfare breakdown and the worst case scenarios play out and no one has any power to stop it. It’s a tense thriller where the tension has been ramped up by its minimalist production and score. Though a product of its time, it’s hard not to see how fail safe could speak into the present, particularly the use of artificial intelligence. The prescient fear of the consequence of relegating world altering decisions and safeguards to artificial mechanisms, while we sit on the sidelines watching our own doom play out on computer monitors, powerless to alter our trajectory. Dark stuff and a fantastically dark ending. Released in the same year as Dr. Strangelove, this is a fantastic companion piece from the brilliant Sidney Lumet. Highly recommend.
- ChrisDecember 29, 2024“You learned too well, professor. You learned so well the now there’s no difference between you and what you want to kill.” - General Warren A. Black. A chilling Cold War epic. Such a great and powerful cast. Even future funny man Dom DeLuise and the future commissioner of Hazzard County makes a sneaky dramatic appearance.⛑🕸☎️
