Where to Watch Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale
- Kevin WardSeptember 13, 2025This probably goes without saying, but like the last couple films, this is heavily reliant on having watched the series (and other films). You won’t be lost if you haven’t but the majority of the emotional payoffs come from having been on this journey with these characters over the past 15 years. It’s enjoyable seeing these characters get a (seemingly) final finale. And it’s only slightly less sharply humorous because of the absence of Dame Maggie Smith. There’s not really a ton at stake here. The biggest foil in the film comes in the form of Alessandro Nivola’s Gus Sambrook. But his angle is pretty obvious from the start, and the situation resolves essentially at the snap of the finger. Still, I enjoyed this immensely.
- M08YSeptember 15, 2025The Grand Finale is a warm and comforting send off to the characters we have spent the best part of 15 years. Very little new ground was trodden here in terms of story or character, but what we got was a gentle and respectful conclusion to the story of Downton Abbey. Dame Maggie Smith was of course tragically missing from this final entry, but the Downton Family made sure to honour her memory. This entry felt more like a movie than the previous Downton Specials. The cinematography was a little more sophisticated. Visuals and Audio were all as they should be.
- CubaneOctober 27, 2025As with so many other once-lauded shows, this one too goes out with a whimper. It strongly relies on audiences' utter devotion to every other prior movie and the entire preceeding series for it to make sense, yet fails to adequately reward the perservereance with any substantive plot.
