Death of a Unicorn Ratings & Reviews
- CMoreMovies1d agoDeath of a Unicorn is a well made comedy-horror movie with some standout acting. The comedy hits more often than it doesn't. The dynamic between Rudd and Ortega was stale and cliche, which is a significant problem as we spend a lot of the movie focused on their relationship; however, the rest of the quirky cast consistently kept the narrative chaotically entertaining; Will Poulter, in particular, absolutely crushed his role. Yes, there were kills in this. No, they were not particularly creative for a flic in this genre.

- Jeremiah7d agoHonestly felt like a late 90s to mid 2000s cgi silly creature feature movie that is tongue in cheek and yet still takes it self seriously with its absurd premise. Not some heady, “elevated” insert whatever genre here, A24 is more known for. For as tropey and on the nose as the satire of the rich ppl being vapid, soulless, selfish and idiotic, It just works. With Will Poulter giving a few laugh out loud lines with as much enthusiasm and seriousness as any more serious role. The definition of a polarizing, hate to love and love to hate role. The cgi is passable mostly while still being super apparent. It’s honestly not much but if you let yourself have a good time with the strange mix of comedy, fantasy and horror, its a pretty fun ride. Some really fun, brutal and gory unicorn kills, and if your paying attention its all the same kills they show in the tapestry, which is a fun setup/payoff. Possibly destined to be a cult fav down the road, idk. Prob not. But if it somehow does end up as such it wont be a huge surprise.
- pickle.rickJuly 28, 2025Sometimes predictable because of star power and cliché roles; Yet it's very entertaining the accurate representation of Billionares, Pharmaceutical Companies and the moral an ethic dilemma of disease cures.
- vandangle2006July 27, 2025Great and entertaining movie. Was pretty predictable, but it was a new take on what a unicorn is.
- mariekyleJuly 24, 2025Good weekend movie.
- PunisherApril 6, 2025The unicorns do not always have to be cute and nice shows us the film very well. It's different. The idea to shoot a film about unicorns is great. The story is entertaining and the special effects are even very good. You can be curious about this movie.
- cultfilmlikerApril 30, 2025I, too, used to snort Pixie Dust to feel like a god Genuinely thought this was going to be a whimsical romp so I watched it with my mother. Made it through the titular death, but my mother sheepishly waited for the lightheartedness I promised. I could feel her growing disdain. Once a big moment happened sparking act two, I generously turned the film off for her and finished it by myself the next morning. I gotta start looking into the films I try to watch with her…. Could I have predicted this would not be for her based on the A24 logo and R-rating? Possibly A great cast and a fun concept! Love to see Anthony Carrigan in anything. All the kills were easy but still relatively fun! Might wanna tell that badass older woman to stop firing shotgun shells literally at your daughter! It’s wild how you can see the common theme in American media right now about healthcare only for the rich and cure-alls being hidden by the government, another good example being [adult swim]’s Common Side Effects. Not that that is unique only to America tho
- praug5July 21, 2025Rubbish storyline terrible CGI.
- streebiJuly 19, 2025Not bad felt they could have added more to the story.
- AntonRehrlMay 7, 2025Good clean family fun and murder.
- Michael HeimgartnerJuly 15, 2025Darkly Funny, Bloody, and Weirdly Charming – But Also Uneven This one had me curious from the start. The concept sounded intriguing - an offbeat mix of dark comedy, horror, and satirical commentary on greed and loss - and honestly, I think it delivers just enough of that weird, irreverent energy to be worth checking out. But it’s definitely an uneven experience, one of those films where you see flashes of brilliance but also some frustrating missteps that hold it back from being great. For one thing, the cast here is stacked, and they all seem like they’re having a blast. Will Poulter especially stands out - he steals every single scene he’s in with that perfectly calibrated blend of smirking menace and goofy charm. He really elevates the whole ensemble, which otherwise feels good but maybe a bit underused. Nobody’s doing bad work here, but you get the sense they were never really pushed to their limits. It’s that kind of movie where everyone’s playing it just broad enough to match the satire but without digging too deep. I also have to mention the CGI, because it was kind of a mixed bag. At the start I found it pretty rough and distracting, not quite convincing enough to sell the creature elements without taking me out of the film. It does get better as things go on, or maybe I just got used to it, but it’s not exactly a highlight. That said, there’s a clear commitment to delivering the kills with gleeful, over-the-top splatter, which was genuinely surprising given the pedigree of the cast. I appreciated that willingness to get messy and mean, even if the effects weren’t always flawless. What really worked for me was the dark comedy. Not all the jokes land, but when they do, they really do. There’s this wicked, absurd tone that kept me entertained throughout, even when the pacing started to lag. Because, yeah - the film has its stretches that feel slow or aimless. It sometimes seems caught between being a razor-sharp satire and a goofy, blood-soaked horror-comedy, and the result can feel unfocused. Some of the dialogue is intentionally absurd in that A24 way - quirky and self-aware - but it also adds to the film’s weird charm. I do think there’s something admirable about how unapologetically weird it is. It’s a nasty little splatter satire that’s not trying to be a four-quadrant crowd-pleaser. It’s about corporate greed, exploitation, and the absurdity of grief, but it’s delivered with this knowingly trashy sensibility that I respect, even when it doesn’t always work. At least it commits to the bit. Honestly, I’m not even sure you could have done much more with this idea without losing the horror-comedy vibe entirely. If you wanted it to be a serious exploration of loss, you’d have to ditch the exploding unicorn guts and surreal banter. This story only really works on that heightened, absurd level - and even then it’s a tough balancing act. I also love that it’s an A24 film, which always makes me a little more willing to give something weird and ambitious a shot. Say what you want about them, they’re consistently willing to bankroll stuff that other studios wouldn’t touch, letting filmmakers experiment, even if the results are messy. This is definitely on the messier side of their catalog, but I’d rather see this kind of risk-taking than another bland, formulaic studio horror. In the end, Death of a Unicorn is one of those movies that’s not for everyone. It’s absolutely not among the best films of 2025, but it’s definitely one of the more entertaining ones if you’re in the right mood. It’s got bloody kills, absurd comedy, an eager-to-please cast, and that weird A24 vibe that rewards you for giving oddball projects a chance. Just don’t expect too much depth - or take it too seriously - and you might have a pretty good time.
- scarlettatsuhiroMay 4, 2025Great to watch with friends, they should make a part 2
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025So much fun! Film perfectly cast. Will Poulter is easily my favorite. Some gruesome kills definitely satisfied my bloodlust. Wonderful send up of the rich—the Martin Shkreli’s of the world that exploit and hoard the world’s scarcities. Low key, it may also explain how Paul Rudd achieved eternal life. Super fun flick. I definitely plan on revisiting with my kids when it releases. (Not saying it’s a kids movie by any stretch, but my kids in particular would love it. 🤩)
- PatrikStarJuly 11, 2025Not funny enough to be a comedy, not scary enough to be horror, not outrageous enough to be satire... it’s like the film couldn't make up its mind and decided to half-ass everything instead.
