Alien on a Dollar-Store Budget Contamination feels like a poor man’s Alien, except much slower and considerably less convincing. Even allowing for 1980 pacing, this thing crawls, and I can imagine a modern audience getting restless pretty quickly. The whole production has the feel of a made-for-TV movie that occasionally remembers it’s supposed to be a gory sci-fi horror film. The acting is pretty terrible, the dialogue doesn’t help, and some of the attitudes toward women are wow-level misogynistic, even by the standards of its era. But there is one reason to watch it: the practical effects. The exploding bodies and alien effects have that wonderfully gooey, handmade quality that CGI simply doesn’t replicate. They’re easily the most memorable part of the movie. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough around them. The story, performances and pacing make the whole thing feel like the B-movie Alien knockoff that it is. Watch it for the practical effects. Everything else is pretty disposable.

The film contains scenes of animal cruelty involving rats which animal lovers will find upsetting.
