Cherry 2000 Ratings & Reviews
- RichardApril 21, 2026I first came across Cherry 2000 in a VHS rental store, one of those tapes with a cover so strange you pick it up just to see what it even is. It turned out to be one of those off beat 80s sci‑fi films that mixes post‑apocalyptic action with a surprisingly earnest story about connection, loyalty and what people think they want versus what they actually need. Melanie Griffith steals the movie as E. Johnson, a tough, no‑nonsense tracker who feels like she walked straight out of a comic book. The world building is pure 80s imagination: desert gangs, neonlit cities and a society where replacing your partner with a robot is treated like normal paperwork. It’s weird, it’s scrappy and it has that unmistakable low budget charm that makes it memorable. It’s exactly the kind of film you’d discover on a rental shelf, not a blockbuster, not something everyone talked about, but one of those odd gems you take home out of curiosity and end up enjoying because it’s so different from anything else. Cherry 2000 is quirky, earnest, and very much a product of its time and that’s part of why it sticks with you.
