Void of any happiness, Brimstone is a brutal descent into dark corners of human cruelty under the guise of religion. This grim western is a tale of vengeance, oppression, and resilience in the face of relentless evil. Dakota Fanning conveys oceans of pain and determination without saying (mostly) a word. Opposite her, Guy Pearce is unhinged, embodying a sadistic force of judgment and malevolence. One of the bleakest characters in film. Sadly there are religious extremists like this out there whether they act on it or not. The nonlinear narrative slowly unravels with Brimstone wallowing in its depressive state. Capturing the harsh landscapes and unforgiving nature of frontier life to only enhance the upsetting tone. The violence is gruesome but it never gets gratuitous- instead, it amplifies the themes of patriarchal brutality and survival against impossible odds. Not your average western though an impressive one.

Fanning is in fine form as a woman who can't vocalize her emotions, though it's Pearce here who steals the show.

The religious fundamentalism ideologically rooted in this country finds allegorical terror in the diabolical Preacher. Reveling in the brutality, fanaticism and warped self-righteousness ultimately at the dark, messianic heart of US exceptionalism today.
Spliced Personality
Sean Burns
Ostentatiously unpleasant, mired in a grim solemnity nowhere near as intelligent nor enlightening as the film seems to think it is.
NYC Movie Guru
Avi Offer
Exhausting, pretentious, and tedious. It's one of the most painfully boring, overlong and disappointing Westerns since Heaven's Gate.

Gruesome and dark as it can be. But could I stop watching? Not me!
North Shore Movies

...a dark and engaging story of two people who won't give up, one for his evil ends, the other for her chance of survival.
Cinemalogue

Some stylish visuals and intriguing genre flourishes aren't enough to overcome the ponderous pace and narrative gimmicks.

I'm all for heroic exertion in pursuit of one's art, but in this case I wish Koolhoven had tried therapy first.
Chicago Sun-Times
Richard Roeper
For all the visceral depictions of hatred and violence and human destruction, it feels as if the director is chasing his own tail and forgetting about making it all mean something.
New York Times
Manohla Dargis
The carnage pushes you away (and wears you down), even as the genre, industrious cast, beautiful landscapes and stark, often striking visuals pull you in.
Los Angeles Times
Sheri Linden
A film that ostensibly aims to expose the subjugation of women spends an awful lot of time hurting and humiliating them.
NPR

After a while ... Koolhoven's inability to modulate the action with wit or even minor shifts in tone makes Brimstone an oppressive grind.
Entertainment Weekly
Darren Franich
Against all odds, Brimstone's a snooze.
IndieWire
David Ehrlich
Reverent and ridiculous in equal measure, Martin Koolhoven's latest epic is a wild pseudo-Western that trembles beneath the biblical weight of its comically grim story.
Slant Magazine
Carson Lund
Its bid for social correctness does nothing to make the juvenile and numbing fixation on brutality any more palatable.
Village Voice
Michael Nordine
You'll feel all 148 minutes of Brimstone's runtime - just maybe not in the way Koolhoven wants you to.
Vanity Fair
Richard Lawson
Even when the film is horrible to look at, it's beautiful, a strange and grim portrait of an annihilating American frontier.
The Playlist
Jessica Kiang
The absorbing and uncompromising Brimstone is a visceral and elegantly grimy vision of an Old West where money, religion, power and politics may be the domains of men, but survival is a woman.
The Hollywood Reporter
Boyd van Hoeij
Koolhoven has painted himself into a corner because the film's unifying theme, the maltreatment of women at the hand of righteous-acting men, takes much too long to crystallize.
