Two stories for the price of one: Lenny works in a video shop and tries to get acquainted with Lea. Leo beats his pregnant wife, Louise, which is a VERY bad idea, as her brother, Louis, is a violent racist.

The story unfolds along two main narrative strands: that of Leo and Louise—a young couple about to start a family—and that of Lenny, a die-hard cinephile who works at a video rental store. These storylines, and consequently the characters themselves, are intertwined; the men are even friends. Leo does not take the prospect of becoming a parent well, leading to severe emotional instability and frequent clashes with his girlfriend, Louise. This greatly infuriates her brother, Louis; despite his friendship with his "brother-in-law," he repeatedly threatens Leo, warning him never to dare hurt his sister again. All of this drives the story toward a violent, bloody turn, giving way to the most primal and animalistic instincts. Lenny, on the other hand, remains completely detached from this morbidly violent spiral involving his friends. He spends his days entirely at work and watching movies—a true film buff. However, Lenny finds himself facing a situation for which he is utterly unprepared: dating a girl. He is awkward and naive from the very first encounter, appearing strange and "abnormal" to his friends. Lenny embodies those who are deeply passionate about something and voluntarily choose to avoid getting their hands dirty with harsh reality. Yet, as previously noted, this approach is invariably mocked, even though it is far healthier than the violence of the outside world. Ultimately, however, Lenny manages to open up, precisely because the "bloody" side of things has self-destructed. Technically, the film is unique and quintessentially Danish, featuring close-ups and handheld camera work—though not exclusively, as the lighting is not entirely naturalistic and serves a specific function within the scenes. The opening sequence—featuring a soundtrack that shifts according to the character—and the way the characters themselves are introduced (much like in the subsequent *Pusher* chapters II and III) are highly distinctive hallmarks of Refn’s style. Refn also brings back part of the cast from the first *Pusher* film, including Kim Bodnia, Zlatko Burić, and Mads Mikkelsen—the latter once again indispensable, crafting a memorable character who feels far closer to the viewer than might initially appear. Incidentally, to watch this rare gem of Danish cinema—which, by the way, isn't even available dubbed in Italian—one probably needs to share a bit of Lenny’s own temperament...
