The crown jewel of Her Majesty's Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.

Atomic Blonde was much better the second, or possibly third, time around. It’s easy to go into this expecting a female John Wick set in Berlin, but that really undersells the movie. Beneath the brutal fights is a surprisingly dense Cold War spy thriller, with double agents, triple agents, shifting allegiances, multiple agendas, and a story that becomes considerably more rewarding once you understand who is playing whom. Charlize Theron is terrific. Knowing how hard she fought to get the movie made, and how much of the physical work she put herself through, makes the action even more impressive. The fights are brutal rather than glamorous. Lorraine gets tired, hurt, battered, and increasingly desperate. That famous extended stairwell sequence feels less like superheroes trading blows and more like two people discovering just how difficult it actually is to incapacitate another human being. The filmmaking is equally impressive. Some of the compositions are beautiful, and the action sequences occasionally have an almost videogame quality because of the fluid camera movement and careful sense of geography. I also love the way the movie combines 1980s filmmaking DNA with modern technique. The neon, Cold War paranoia, grimy Berlin locations, fashions, and phenomenal New Wave soundtrack establish the period, while the camera work and action choreography feel completely contemporary. It doesn’t simply take place in the ’80s. At times it feels like a movie from that era that somehow learned modern filmmaking tricks. The acting is excellent throughout. James McAvoy is particularly good as Percival, a wonderfully grubby, unpredictable intelligence operative who practically steals every scene he enters. And the relationship between Lorraine and Delphine gives the movie an unexpected emotional center. Delphine telling Lorraine that she can recognize when she’s telling the truth by looking at her eyes is such a small moment, but it says a lot. In a movie populated almost entirely by professional liars, she may be one of the few people who briefly sees the real Lorraine. That makes what happens to her considerably more painful. Not everything lands perfectly. There are occasional sequences that feel strangely disconnected or overly stylized, and the labyrinthine spy plot can be difficult to follow the first time through. But on rewatch, those weaknesses bothered me much less. Once I stopped trying to figure out the mechanics of the plot, I could appreciate just how much craft is here: the performances, cinematography, editing, music, choreography, script, and the constant game of deception underneath everything. This isn't simply an action movie with a female lead. It’s a Cold War spy thriller that happens to contain some extraordinary action scenes. 8/10

Soundtrack to this is probably one of the best set in the 80's a great action spy thriller. Audio in DTS X is fabulous for this style of movie and works well with full home theatre set up. Theron & McAvoy have great chemistry, the main cast over all is a who's who of British actors. Can tell this is where Leitch honed his future John Wick style.

This film is as cold as the sterile images, pompous dialogue and German language.

Enjoyed it more than expected, nearly two hours gone before I even noticed. This one’s slick, stylish and unapologetically brutal. Charlize Theron owns every frame as Lorraine Broughton, a Cold War era MI6 agent who fights like John Wick and dresses like a Vogue assassin. The Berlin setting oozes neon noir and the soundtrack? Wall to wall bangers, Bowie, Depeche Mode, Nena each track hitting harder than the last punch. The plot’s a twisty spy maze, but it’s the vibe that carries it: long takes, bone crunching fights and a sense of cool that never feels forced. James McAvoy adds chaos, Sofia Boutella adds heat and the whole thing moves like a mixtape with bruises. Watched it, got pulled in and suddenly the credits rolled. That’s a win. The kind of film that earns a spot in the “stylish and savage” shelf and maybe a rewatch just for that stairwell scene.

I didn’t really like the style of the movie. It felt way too long, and there were too few action scenes to keep me engaged.

⭐⭐⭐½ – Atomic Blonde – Cold War cool with a killer soundtrack Atomic Blonde is slick, stylish, and a lot of fun — a spy thriller that earns its place without leaning on the Bond template. Set against the fractured backdrop of Berlin just before the Wall comes down, it uses that tension well, giving the film a sense of instability that matches its characters. Charlize Theron carries the movie effortlessly. She’s physical, bruised, and convincing in a way that sells the violence rather than glamorising it. The much-talked-about stairwell fight still stands out as a highlight — messy, exhausting, and refreshingly unpolished compared to the usual spy action fare. You feel every hit, which goes a long way toward grounding what could otherwise be pure style exercise. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting, but in a good way. The ’80s needle drops aren’t subtle, yet they fit the mood perfectly and help define the film’s identity. Visually, it’s confident and striking, though sometimes that confidence tips into prioritising cool over clarity, especially when the plot starts folding in on itself. Overall, Atomic Blonde is a solid, entertaining spy film — stylish without being empty, brutal without being gratuitous. It doesn’t quite rise to the level of the genre’s best, but it’s well worth the ride, especially if you want espionage with a harder edge and a different face at the centre. 🥃 Pairing: A vodka martini — ice-cold, clean, and sharp enough to bite back. It matches Atomic Blonde’s frosty polish and sudden violence: smooth on the surface, brutal when it hits, and gone before you’ve fully decided how you feel about it.

Atomic Blonde is a stylish, cold-war spy thriller set in Berlin in 1989. While it tries to be politically sharp, the story gets lost under layers of double-crosses and convoluted plotting. The film ultimately favors slick action and 80s nostalgia over meaningful political satire.
