Every once in a while, a low-budget movie manages to hit considerably above its pay grade. This is one of them. The cast consists mostly of recognizable-but-not-famous actors, the production clearly didn’t have much money to throw around, and the premise sounds like something you’d discover at 1 a.m. on a forgotten cable channel. And yet… it’s actually pretty good. Imagine Aliens crossed with The Thing, with portions of The Mist and just a tiny sprinkling of The Blair Witch Project. Put the whole thing inside a supermarket and you pretty much have the recipe. The filmmakers use their limited resources intelligently. The lighting is particularly effective, and there are some surprisingly good compositions and camera angles. Instead of trying to fake a $50-million production, they mostly work within their limitations and concentrate on tension. The performances are also better than expected. Nobody is winning an Oscar here, but the actors take the material seriously enough that the movie works. There are definitely some rough edges. The editing occasionally feels awkward, and you can see places where a bigger budget or a little more polish would have helped. And then there’s the ending. Sorry, but I saw that coming from a mile away. What was presumably intended as one final clever twist instead felt like the movie finally arriving at the destination I’d been waiting at for the previous twenty minutes. Still, I had fun. It’s derivative, inexpensive, and occasionally clumsy, but it’s also imaginative, atmospheric, and far more competent than its direct-to-video pedigree suggests. Sometimes a B-movie knows exactly what it is, uses what little money it has wisely, and gives you an entertaining 85 minutes. This one does exactly that.
