- RichyE2d agoSet in a dystopian Neo-Tokyo, Akira follows Kaneda and Tetsuo—two teenage bikers caught in a web of government experiments, psychic powers, and social collapse. As Tetsuo’s abilities spiral out of control, the city teeters on the edge of destruction. ✅ Pros Groundbreaking Animation: Even decades later, Akira’s hand-drawn visuals remain jaw-dropping. The fluid motion, detailed backgrounds, and explosive action sequences set a new standard for anime. Complex Themes: The film tackles power, identity, corruption, and the consequences of unchecked science with philosophical depth. Atmospheric World-Building: Neo-Tokyo is gritty, chaotic, and alive—an unforgettable cyberpunk setting. Iconic Soundtrack: The tribal, experimental score by Shōji Yamashiro enhances the tension and surrealism. Cultural Impact: Akira helped popularize anime globally and influenced countless creators in film, comics, and video games. ❌ Cons Dense Plot: The story can be confusing, especially for first-time viewers unfamiliar with the manga. Some narrative threads feel rushed or underexplained. Character Development: While Kaneda and Tetsuo are compelling, other characters get limited screen time or emotional depth. Pacing Issues: The film’s middle act slows down before ramping up to its explosive finale, which may feel uneven to some. ⭐ Star Rating Akira is a visual and thematic masterpiece. While its storytelling may challenge viewers, its ambition and artistry make it essential viewing for any fan of science fiction or animation.

- gooserexJanuary 8, 2025God status level anime.
- ShaveAssJuly 24, 2025While the storyline might be an old trope and the ending a little confusing for modern day viewers; even just appreciating the cultural icon that is Akira with its beautifully hand drawn animation is enough to keep even new fans satiated. Call this watch “homework” for new anime fans
- BEAULONEAJuly 19, 2025Akira is visually impressive, especially the animation during the motorcycle scenes, which really stood out to me. The art style and atmosphere pull you into its chaotic world, and it's easy to see how it influenced a lot of what came after. That said, I had a hard time following the story. Some parts felt rushed or unclear, and I found myself confused more than once. I know it’s a classic and was ahead of its time, but as a first-time viewer, I left feeling a bit lost even though I appreciated the film’s ambition and style.
