- flavo43November 28, 2025’71 is a gripping, relentlessly tense thriller that plunges viewers into the brutal chaos of The Troubles through the eyes of a young British soldier completely unprepared for the world he’s dropped into. Jack O’Connell delivers a phenomenal performance, portraying a recruit whose fear, confusion, and desperation feel painfully authentic as he becomes stranded alone in hostile Belfast streets after a riot spirals out of control. The film’s strength lies in its raw portrayal of the conflict—not as a clean political struggle, but as a murky, violent maze where loyalties blur and survival becomes the only objective. The cat-and-mouse pursuit is executed with visceral urgency, capturing both the complexity of the factions involved and the terrifying unpredictability of urban warfare. With its handheld realism, tight pacing, and emotional intensity, ’71 doesn’t take sides; instead, it exposes the human cost of a conflict defined by mistrust and tragedy. It is a standout modern war drama—lean, haunting, and unforgettable.
- alexandermockJuly 23, 2025Wonderful movie about a soldier stranded in enemy territory during the Troubles in North Ireland. It has themes such as dubious morals and motivations, as well as the old adage of “being a soldier means just being cannon fodder for the powers that be.” It is more of a thriller then a war film, and it’s interesting to see a ground level view of this long standing but low intensity conflict

- Mister ArnMay 21, 2025I followed the movie right up to the first shooting, but then it became very confusing.
- Tomcat501April 14, 2025Brutal film
- ርልዪረFebruary 4, 2025Powerful and at times harrowing depiction of a squaddie sent to Belfast at the height of the ‘troubles’. Jack O’Connell stars as a Derbyshire lad Gary, who quickly becomes caught up in sectarian violence and who is forced to go on the run in unfamiliar territory, with murderous Catholic gunmen looking to add him to their tally of downed soldiers. With the added complication of the presence of two members of the covert counter-insurgency unit of the British Army in the middle of an operation, and an inexperienced and ineffectual commanding officer, Gary has to fight tooth and claw to survive and return to his regiment; particularly as his own countrymen, in the form of the undercover officers, see him as a risk to their operation, meaning his safety hangs by a thread on all counts. 3 people found this helpful
