I’ve studied Kowloon Walled City, and am fascinated with the history and architecture. This movie absolutely nails it. I wanted to see more of it. But the city itself is a character in the movie, serving as a haven for the criminal characters. It doesn’t get everything perfect, but it’s probably the best realization of the city on film (and there isn’t a lot) The story is surprisingly good and engaging, and normally I’m not into martial arts films for the story. The action is fantastical and, at times, goofy. But it’s fun, and has moments of brutality that do a good job of getting a reaction out of you. It drags a tiny bit in the middle section, but overall I’d say this movie is well worth a watch. I heard this is supposed to be a trilogy of movies, I hope so. The more you think about this movie, the more unsettling it gets. The more you watch, the more that you notice. The more you analyze the videotape she’s watching, you start to realize even darker shit happening in the background. You start to realize the movie is hinting at this underground black-market for fucked up occult items. There’s an irl website pertaining to this, look it up. There are so many layers to this film. An absolute masterpiece of horror. This stuck with me for a good week after watching it. It’s such a fucked up film. Amazing cast, powerful performances. Cringe inducing body horror.
