- Introducing: The FormatE3
Introducing: The FormatI CAN ALSO BE WEIRD Hank is not alone in his ability to make a weird vlogbrothers video. In which John makes secret keepers, discusses being 14 and deep, wonders at what life must've been like when we could not image the inside of the body, and soothes his worry by reminding himself that he is a primate. - Behind the Scenes in the Deep SeaE6
Behind the Scenes in the Deep SeaIt's ridiculous that this is possible...bringing the deep sea up so that you can walk among it??? I love aquariums so much... The Monterrey Bay Aquarium is about two hours south of San Francisco and exists in partnership with the Monterrey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, which are the folks who do a lot of the science and did most of the collections for the Into the Deep Exhibit. - Behind the Scenes of my TUMBLR MEME LORD ERAE7
Behind the Scenes of my TUMBLR MEME LORD ERAIn which John goes behind the scenes to a deep, dark place full of strange creatures--a place called tumblr. But don't worry, everyone. I'm not a PERSON. I'm a COFFEE COMPANY THAT DONATES ITS PROFIT TO CHARITY. And a meme lord. - Is it Good or Bad that we Haven't Met Aliens?E20
Is it Good or Bad that we Haven't Met Aliens?I didn't mention one of the theories in this video, which is that all of the aliens are hiding from each other because there is some terrible insidious force in the universe that punishes anyone who is loud. This doesn't really seem likely to me because, look, malevolence is actually pretty rare in nature. Much more common is "I need that, you're using it, I don't care about you, so die" not "I am going to spend a bunch of resources SPECIFICALLY TO COME AND GET YOU." I also kind mis-stated the "Great Filter" hypothesis, because the filter could either be before or after the point where humans currently are, so it's kinda wrapped up in both the first and the second bits. - Wrexham's Most Amazing FeelingE28
Wrexham's Most Amazing FeelingThis is the story of an amazing feeling thousands of people had yesterday--a feeling that, ultimately, they gave each other. It's a football story about a fellow named Ryan Reynolds, a football club, and a recently unretired goalkeeper who will never buy a drink in Wrexham again. In which John cannot be particularly excited about his own football club, so he decides to be excited about other people's joy. - The Organism that Broke BiologyE29
The Organism that Broke BiologyAnd it wasn't the last time we'd break biology either. We were so certain that there were such very particular buckets to put things into, but you probably haven't even heard of some of the weird things organisms get up to. Like conjugation?? What...you touch and exchange genetic information? Prokaryotic consortiums are like lichen but for bacteria. It's wild...wild wild times here on Planet Earth. - On TikTok BansE31
On TikTok BansIn all likelihood, Montana's TikTok ban is impossible to implement, both legally and practically. A national ban would be a really significant loss, and I think it's worth recognizing that. The current frames I've been hearing are "TikTok is trash so of course we could ban it" or "TikTok is a treasure so of course we shouldn't ban it." A content platform is not its code, it is its cultures. To destroy that is a truly dramatic step and I hope the people considering doing that understand what they are proposing. I hope they are motivated by more than a distaste for social media and trying to look "tough on china." But, honestly, I don't know. I think we've gotten ourselves into quite a pickle and I think it's OK to say "I don't know what to do about this." - I Discovered a Soap SecretE32
I Discovered a Soap SecretAs I type this I actually JUST got out of the shower, where I used Sun Basin's "Navigator." It's a really fresh, clean, herby one with gentle exfoliant. And, honestly, one of the best parts of Sun Basin is our product descriptions. An absolute delight!!! - GOOD NEWSE33
GOOD NEWSIn which John visits Sierra Leone's Kono District for the first time since Covid and is astonished by the progress, the hope, and how far we still have to go. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to everyone who is working on the MCOE, who is strengthening the healthcare system in Sierra Leone, and also everyone who has donated, or joined the sock club, or bought soap, or spread the word about the ongoing global maternal mortality crisis. Really, thanks to all of you. Look what humans can do together. - My Cancer Press Tier ListE39
My Cancer Press Tier ListAs was reported might be the case, it turns out that the first day after chemo is pretty OK, but then it gets progressively worse until day 5 or 6. I'm now on day 7 and feeling OK. I've had many (but not all!) of the expected side effects, but my appetite has been good, which is very good for the quality of life! Glad to be through the worst of the first treatment, but obviously I've still got a long way to go. I wouldn't want everyone to think that Day 7 is indicative of how you feel while you're doing chemo...if you had seen me on Day 3 I would have been 100% horizontal. - Understanding Cancer Survival RatesE45
Understanding Cancer Survival RatesWell, yknow, It’s a weird one, but I make stuff about the things I’m thinking about and this is definitely one of them! It’s such a wild thing that we talk about cancer in a unified way when it is many hundreds of different diseases. Cancer isn’t a disease, it’s a way for disease to happen. And even with something as treatable as Hodgkin’s there are lots of ways it can be more or less dangerous, and sometimes it gets really stubborn! So far that isn’t happening with me, but I am very aware that it could. I’m not a population, I’m just one person, so I get to be on one side or the other! It’s good to actually understand what it all means. - Alone on the Cancer Boat: A Vlogbrothers ReunionE46
Alone on the Cancer Boat: A Vlogbrothers ReunionIn which Hank and John hang out in the loading dock of the DFTBA.com warehouse and discuss cancer, boats, micromorts, expanding our understanding of what healthcare can be and do, and how despite the jokie jokies, this whole thing does kinda suck. - Bon Your VivantE47
Bon Your VivantToday is the last chemo day of my current treatment plan!! I will feel terrible next week, and then I will mend up a bit before I start radiation, which will take a while but /should/ have significantly less impact in terms of symptoms. I will also have a fairly important scan next week at some point, and I'll have a big hunk of time before I hear back about the results...so that's quite scary! So, fingers crossed and all that...you never really know how it's gonna go but it seems like it's going well so far. I would definitely be very happy if this is the last of the chemo I ever have to do, but also, just grateful to have these tools. - What to Get for a Cancer PatientE48
What to Get for a Cancer PatientOh!! And one more thing you can do…help the helpers. Whether that’s fun self-care products or reaching out to say you love them and they’re doing a great job. That’s what it seems like people mostly need. Cancer treatment is very hard…physically and psychologically. Knowing that I’m doing what needs to be done even if it really really sucks is extremely valuable. - Tuberculosis Fighters Have a PosseE51
Tuberculosis Fighters Have a PosseIn which John makes an unscripted video from an unusual room about how diseases need "a constituency," and how activists working together across the globe really can dramatically lower the burden of an illness and increase the availability of treatment. This week, I've been reminded of an old adage: Never underestimate nerdfighteria. - Three MorningsE54
Three MorningsHuge thanks to Abi Rein and Jessica Rollins for traveling to Colombia, capturing such important stories, and working so hard to make the Awesome Coffee Club work. At dftba.com, thanks also to Zoe Ryder, Brandi Jessup, Helen Thompson, Alisa LaRue, Rachel Navarro, Dave Loos, Brandi Bergreen, our incoming CEO Laura Joukovski, and Krystyn Blackbird, who packed those coffee orders for you. Indeed, thanks to EVERYONE at dftba for being so committed to making the awesome coffee club succeed. - The Biggest Science Story of the WeekE56
The Biggest Science Story of the WeekIn the short term, we're in significantly more trouble than we thought we were. It turns out that we've been doing geo-engineering all this time and now we have some fantastically good data on one of the best ways to potentially make it through the climate crisis. - RemissionE62
RemissionCancer is messy...just like being a human. I'm starting to get my feet back under me (and also finally getting away from waiting for the other shoe to drop.) I've pretty much only had good news since the diagnosis, which has left me waffling between feeling like there's definitely something terrible right around the horizon, and like I shouldn't be so harmed by this experience with the experience of other people has been so much worse. - The Weirdest Post-Chemo SymptomsE64
The Weirdest Post-Chemo SymptomsHey! You're in the description! Well done. Weird thing going on in my life right now is that I'm on the Dropout.tv show Dimension 20 (which I am a big fan of.) You can watch the first episode here on YouTube, but the rest of them are behind their paywall! It's one of my favorite subscriptions though, so you should consider it! - Barely Contained Rage: An Open Letter to Danaher and CepheidE67
Barely Contained Rage: An Open Letter to Danaher and CepheidIn which John tries to control his rage at Danaher and Cepheid, the corporations that are using a printer-ink business model to overcharge for tuberculosis tests, thus resulting in millions of people going undiagnosed every year, many of whom will die. - The Worst Disease in Human HistoryE68
The Worst Disease in Human HistoryAllies in the fight against TB! Not always agreeing on how best to engage in that battle. Of course, there are TONS of other reasons that TB is good at being bad. And, indeed, it replicates slowly not just because of it's massive, expensive cell wall, but also because it seems like there is evolutionary advantage in doing that. Possibly because we have lived with it for so long, TB has evolved to be a long and lingering disease rather than one that explodes and kills quickly. What a mess life is. - What the Heck is the UN?E74
What the Heck is the UN?I don't know why I decided to do this on the second day of Pizzamas! I guess I just got really curious about what the heck the UN is. And I'd just like to congratulate humanity on not having done World War II again for the last 78 years. Good work! Keep it up! PLEASE OH PLEASE KEEP IT UP. - An Incredible UpdateE76
An Incredible UpdateIn which John shares an extraordinary update: Johnson & Johnson has confirmed they will not enforce secondary patents on bedaquiline in ANY low- or middle-income country. The agreement applies to 134 nations, and it is essentially everything that we've been asking for. Astonishing. Wondrous. - America's Second Favorite Fourth Tier English Soccer TeamE80
America's Second Favorite Fourth Tier English Soccer TeamThere's a 20-way tie for third. In which John discusses his beloved AFC Wimbledon, which is not Wrexham (the club owned by Rob McIlhenny and Ryan Reynolds) but is ........ in second place? Other topics discussed included Joe Lewis's shorts, Ali al-Hamadi, Jack Currie, and Joe Lewis's shorts. Also, the surprising ways in which AFC Wimbledon is helping nerdfighteria learn how to make change.
