    The Return of the MasterAfter learning that her old wards she looked after are returning to the island, old nurse Lally looks back on the time when she first knew them and how everything changed when the master of the house, John Mowbray, returned home after the end of World War One, now deeply affected by his wartime experiences.

    StellaNow in the present of 1938, the Mowbray family welcome the arrival of eldest daughter Stella and her son Helmut. Now married, she finds that while some things remain the same, other things have changed. Baptiste has become involved in political activity, which sees him come into conflict with Father Toussaint and a threat to his job as a school teacher. Meanwhile Stella still holds affections for Andrew, but is stunned to discover that he is now with Cornelie and suffering from TB. And when she learns that Mr Lilipoulala is still visiting her father with supplies of drugs to deal with his nightmares, she decides to take matters into her own hands.

    JoanMr Lilioulala's body is found in the river, but the bag with his drugs is recovered by Mamselle. Joan arrives on the island with her son Ned, who finds a kindred spirit with his grandfather John. Joan becomes involved with Baptiste's political campaigning, only to find themselves under scrutiny from Father Toussaint and the local authorities. Meanwhile Stella tells Joan she has to leave after kissing Andrew, realizing she may of made the situation far worse with her actions.

    NatalieAndrew is now seriously ill with TB after Stella has left and he reveals his affections for Joan. Cornelie visits Joan in the night to ask her to come to nurse him, fearing he will die if she doesn't. Baptiste returns to the island buoyed by support for his efforts to form a union, but a rally in the street causes Father Toussaint to pay a visit to both him and Joan, with a veiled threat to the latter if things continue. Meanwhile youngest daughter Natalie visits the island and is determined to fly both Andrew and her father away to get better, but will events conspire to spoil her plans?
