- flavo43November 23, 2025SGU: Stargate Universe was a bold shift for a franchise that had, until then, followed a familiar and much-loved formula. Instead of the lighter adventure tone of SG-1 and Atlantis, SGU embraced a darker, more character-driven approach—one filled with mystery, tension, and a sense of constant danger. I’m still not sure if it was the “right” direction, but it was certainly an intriguing one, and I enjoyed watching it unfold. The series excelled because of its characters: flawed, frightened, ambitious, intelligent, and courageous in ways that felt more grounded than we’d seen before in the franchise. Their interpersonal conflicts and personal demons made the show stand apart from its sister series. Unfortunately, the constant shadow of cancellation never allowed SGU the stability it needed to fully explore its own universe. Despite strong effects, engaging storylines, and occasional crossover support, it wasn’t enough to keep the show alive long enough to meet its vast potential.
