Battle at the Binary Stars Ratings & Reviews
AV Club
Zack Handlen
We'll have to wait until next week to find out how the series gets its protagonist out of lock up and aboard the titular Discovery, but for the first time in ages, I'm looking forward to watching more new Star Trek. It's a good feeling.
Independent (UK)
Andrew Lowry
This new, harder-edged Trek feels of a post-Game of Thrones landscape, but it remains to be seen how much of the idealism can survive in 2017.
Entertainment Weekly
Eric Renner Brown
In "A Battle at the Binary Stars," the conflict develops further.
New York Times
Sopan Deb
The writers are taking risks and should receive some credit for that. But whether viewers will be able to get behind Burnham when we don't know much about the rest of the ensemble remains to be seen.
New York Magazine/Vulture
Mallory Ortberg
I'm genuinely bummed to have lost such a fantastic actor so soon, particularly when a significant part of Discovery's initial marketing focused on having two incredibly talented women of color as the main leads.
Geeks of Color
María Garduño
The Battle at the Binary Stars presents more action and development than the first episode, making the pace faster and more engaging to the audience.
Slashfilm
Monique Jones
But overall, Star Trek: Discovery seems poised to give us an adventure worthy of the Star Trek name, and I think it's worth it for us to keep watching to see where Burnham's journey takes us
Uproxx
Alan Sepinwall
Despite the concessions to modern TV storytelling and effects, Discovery feels like a Star Trek show -- at times one with the potential to be quite good.
Akron Beacon Journal
George M. Thomas
The performances? We're given an inkling of how Burnham can and will grow.
Empire Magazine
Ed Gross
... it's what Star Trek is supposed to do: take modern society and put it through the prism of the genre.
Nerdist
Dan Casey
What follows is a series of increasingly tense and, in some cases, unfortunate events that puts Michael at odds with the rest of her crew, and finds the Federation encountering the Klingon Empire for the first time in nearly a century.
IGN Movies
Scott Collura
The first two installments of the show very much feel like a prologue to the bigger series, but also an important one that sets up Burnham's bigger arc.
The Young Folks
Andrea Thompson
Burnham is clearly worth sympathizing with and rooting for, and she will clearly continue to be the main focus.
TV Guide
Megan Vick
This attack also added a deeper understanding of why relations between Starfleet and the Klingons are so tenuous and icy in years going forward.
SFX Magazine
Lauren O'Callaghan
It could be taken straight out of the rebooted Star Trek movies, but don't let that put you off - it looks incredible, gives us some well-earned action, and is only different from past series because of technical limitations of the time.
Den of Geek
James Hunt
Personally I enjoy when Star Trek episodes end on an optimistic note, but I've got to admit, I haven't seen one end quite as pessimistically as that before. And I can't wait to see what happens next!
TV Equals
Mark Trammell
It was also a kind of a letdown ... especially to a long-time fan.
