E11:4World War II has ended in the rest of Denmark, but on Bornholm the situation is different. On May 7, 1945, the Russians begin bombing Rønne and Nexø - and Johan and Erna and their children are told to seek shelter in the countryside. Erna gives birth to a little boy, who is named Monty - after the British Field Marshal Montgomery. Johan looks forward to getting more work now that the war is over. - 2:4
E22:4Four years after the end of World War II, Johan still hopes for better times. He believes that the family should move to Zealand, where there is more work and better future opportunities - also for the young. But Erna wants to stay on Bornholm and take care of her sick mother. Johan is offered a permanent job, but he does not want to work for a defense contractor. - 3:4
E33:4Dorthe is to have her confirmation, and Erna is looking forward to the whole family being together for the first time since her mother's death. But a strike is brewing, and the steamer may not be able to transport the family members from Zealand. Johan and his brother-in-law Karl have opposing views when it comes to industrial action. - 4:4
E44:4Monty goes to high school, but he has difficulty concentrating on his studies at home. Because Dorthe's little son cries a lot. Johan has fainted in the quarry, but he does not want to be seen by the doctor. Monty sees a cute girl named Birte, but both she and Johan and Erna have to say goodbye to Monty when he goes to Zealand to study to become a school teacher. His parents are afraid that he will never return home to Bornholm again.
