Chapter 1José Inocêncio walks through the lands in the Ilhéus region until he comes across the Jequitibá River. He decides to stick his machete at the foot of the tree, sealing his fate with that place. Firmino charges Cândida for the debts left by her husband. José Inocêncio is surprised by Firmino's thugs and his body is stripped of his skin. Rachid, the peddler passing by, is also attacked. - Chapter 2E2
Chapter 2José Inocêncio doesn't like knowing that Boi Bumbá comes from the lands of Belarmino. Quitéria talks to Nena about Marianinha, Maria Santa's older sister, who was kicked out of the house by Venâncio some time ago. José Inocêncio and Firmino argue. José Inocêncio's entourage arrives and is received with celebration. Venâncio leaves Maria Santa at Jacutinga's house. Chapter 13José Inocêncio asks João Pedro not to tell anyone about the machete buried at Jequitibá's feet. João Pedro decides to live with José Inocêncio. Morena gives João Pedro the medal of Our Lady that belonged to Maria Santa. There is a passage of time and the story now takes place in the present day. João Pedro takes the bags of cocoa from the Jequitibá Rei farm to Ilhéus alongside Zinha. - Chapter 14E14
Chapter 14João Pedro asks Inácia for help so that his father accepts Mariana. Zinha blames José Augusto for Jupará's death. Mariana goes through the drawers in the farm room, and Inácia scolds her. Chapter 17On the way back to the farm, Mariana tries to seduce José Inocêncio. They argue and he leaves her in the middle of the road. Upon arrival, José Inocêncio tells her that Mariana has “fallen into the world" and João Pedro goes after her on horseback. José Bento takes Kika to a luxury hotel in Rio, but his cards don't go through. Kika ends up paying. - Chapter 18E18
Chapter 18José Inocêncio is embarrassed in the presence of Mariana and João Pedro during breakfast. Mariana declares herself to José Inocêncio, who is shaken.
