But Johann, who had only recently started dating Katharina, insists he is innocent. The police, who initially believe him to be the murderer, are soon confronted with a whole series of suspects. The attractive Katharina had a strong effect on men. She had dumped many of her admirers who were madly in love with her after a while, driving them to the brink of despair. Her long-time partner Gregor Baumann had seen many of these lovers come and go and had repeatedly experienced the painful realization that he was not enough for Katharina. He is also among the suspects, especially since a farewell letter written by Katharina shortly before her death has been found. She wanted to break up with Gregor for good. But Katharina's colleague Richard Paulsen, who was willing to leave his wife for Katharina three years earlier, also has to endure questioning by the police.
