In 1912, the 13-year-old Frederik becomes crown prince. He lives an isolated life and has a difficult relationship with the king, Christian X, who is a domineering father and a man bound by tradition. But out in society, the traditions are changing and the burgeoning democracy means that the politicians will take over the power and privileges that the king has left. The battle between the king and the politicians culminates in 1920, when the monarchy is thrown into one of the biggest crises in recent times. A crisis that the crown prince also witnesses.

The young crown prince also enjoys life and not least the work in the navy. But a crown prince's most important task is to marry and produce an heir to the throne. When he finally meets love at the age of 35, the country erupts in excitement and even the old, domineering king falls for his new daughter-in-law. But hard times soon await, as Hitler massively rearms in the 1930s and the world once again stands on the brink of a world war.

Crown Prince Frederik is 41 years old and still has a difficult relationship with his father, the old King Christian X, who keeps his son out of royal duties. But when the king is hospitalized after a violent riding accident, the crown prince is appointed as ruling deputy during one of the most critical moments of the war, much against his father's wishes.

Because without sons, the throne passes to his brother, Prince Knud, and his sons. However, it requires a change in the law and what do the Danes say about it?
