Historical drama documentary series about the Queen's father, Frederik IX, and the monarchy during his lifetime. In 1912, the 13-year-old Frederik becomes crown prince. He lives an isolated life and has a difficult relationship with the king, Christian X, who is a domineering father and a man bound by tradition. But out in society, the traditions are changing and the burgeoning democracy means that the politicians will take over the power and privileges that the king has left. The battle between the king and the politicians culminates in 1920, when the monarchy is thrown into one of the biggest crises in recent times. A crisis that the crown prince also witnesses.
