During pantomime rehearsals Father Brown learns that Scarlett made enemies among the local amateur dramatics group, one of whom is also attacked. Father Brown is charged with finding the culprit so that the pantomime can go ahead successfully.

Chief suspect is Deepak Chatterjee, the man in charge of rail closure, but he reveals a secret about Ben which allows Father Brown to unmask the real killer, in addition to acting as an impromptu midwife.
