Catweazle Ratings & Reviews

Saw it as a kid on TV in the late ’70s and it felt like magic had tripped over a power line and landed in the modern world. Catweazle, a scruffy 11th century wizard, accidentally time travels to 1970s England and finds himself bewildered by telephones (“telling bones”), electricity (“elec trickery”) and cars (“iron horses”). With the help of two kind hearted boys, first Carrot, then Cedric, he tries to find his way back to his own time, armed only with spells, superstition and a frog named Touchwood. Geoffrey Bayldon’s performance is pure gold: eccentric, heartfelt and hilariously confused. The show blends gentle comedy with a wistful sense of displacement, a man out of time, clinging to magic in a world that runs on machines. Watching it again feels like opening a dusty storybook from your childhood, one filled with laughter, wonder and a touch of melancholy. It’s quirky, charming and deeply British in the best way.
