Where to Watch And Yet the Town Moves

While not every half-episode is great, the whole of the series is comfy stories in a comedic setting with a collection of idiots you can't help but love. This combined with the experimental direction and animation studio SHAFT excels in makes it for an unforgettable watch--which is impressive, because at first pass And Yet the Town Moves should be forgettable. This is SHAFT restrained--I didnt even realize it was one of their series until the occassional hyper detailed foot shot or random perv angles started to appear, and even then these are all surprisingly tasteful...for SHAFT. SHAFT has made their career on weird art and making the mundane perverse, and they mostly manage to keep their degenerate urges in check. Good for them! There is an artfulness in everything they do, and compared to most anime they are more subtle about it, but it does sometimes clash with the otherwise goofy sexless teenage dorks and their ongoing shenanigans and is there solely for the viewer, which adds an uncomfortable voyeurestic feel to what is an otherwise entirely wholesome experience. As for the humor, it rarely got a laugh but always a smile. The back and forth between Harashima and her professor is the exception in this because the banter is simply incredible and is a particular highlight. The voicework is fantastic, lots of legends from GINTAMA and beyond just having a good time. I have no idea what the budget was for this show but every joke and gag is expertly animated at points of which I was in awe of just how hard they went. This is high-effort buffoonery! Each half-episode or minisode (it changes) is usually standalone, often exploring different genres or exploring a particular character in snapshots. Its entirely unpredictable and if something doesnt stick, the next might. I watched this weekly almost by accident, but it is certainly best reserved for short viewing sessions rather than my preferred binging. Music is all around solid. There is an in-episode song played by the cast that is pretty good, and the ending theme is fun, but that opening is such a lovely blend of animation and music that I rarely skipped it. In all, I'd consider this a must watch if you are into this sort of light entertainment. I will say the first epsiode didn't do much for me, but you will get suckered in before long if you give it a chance. So yeah, give this one a chance!!
