Waterworld Ratings & Reviews
- flavo43November 26, 2025Waterworld had the potential to be a standout in the post-apocalyptic genre. I’ve always loved these types of films because they allow creators to break free from convention, as long as the world they build feels immersive and believable. In this case, the concept of a flooded Earth was fascinating, and the production team absolutely committed—constructing massive floating sets, designing unique vehicles, and crafting a society shaped entirely by life on the ocean. But despite the impressive world-building and staggering budget, the film falters where it matters most: character and script. With the exception of Dennis Hopper’s wonderfully unhinged Deacon, most characters feel flat or awkwardly written, never fully grounding themselves in the world around them. Their emotional arcs “landed dry,” lacking the depth needed to match the scale of the setting. Waterworld isn’t without ambition or visual spectacle, but ultimately the performances and storytelling aren’t strong enough to carry the film the rest of the way.

- adecariaAugust 4, 2025"In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king," they say. In Waterworld, the man with gills should be king, but somehow this guy is only barely scraping by as a loner with absolutely no backstory to lean on. I wanted Costner's character to be a real superhero. I wanted a more fiendish villain than a one-eyed man who somehow enforces manual labor with a parade-toss of cigarettes. For a movie about an endless watery abyss... this has no depth at all.
- JeremiahJuly 18, 2025On my first and only visit to the Mall of America I rode an indoor roller coaster and then dad took me to see Waterworld. Watching the Ulysses Cut which is like 40 min longer than the theatrical. Just kinda fleshing things out way more. I didnt mind it but it does slow down the movie some. From what little i can remember cause its been prob 2 decades if not more that ive seen this. This is far from perfect but man does it have some really cool highs. With a ton of them coming from Dennis Hopper who is absolutely hilarious in this role. I had several laugh out loud moments with him. When i read that he won a golden raspberry for this role, that just makes me hate that organization even more. Dare i say his overall role is just the blueprint for immorten joe. But way more hilarious. The genre comes full circle. There is a lot of things that dont work but there is a lot of things that do work. Including Costner where his lack of range doesnt get in the way of this role. All in all too its a cool world with some great world building. Next time i log this movie i will tell another strange coincidence story that has to do with this movie.
- Josh ZinkJune 20, 2025Better than its reputation led me to believe. Fun villain, which is a big draw.
- Daniel GustavssonOctober 11, 2024I found this movie really interesting and enjoyable. It has so much details that you don't see today and much more creativity than many movies. It also has that 90s feel to it. It really dares to be ambitious and amazingly it still manages to look pretty good, 20+ years after it was made. It feels so grand and well made. It is absolutely worth a watch!
- scottdavidpMarch 11, 2025Solid 90s entertainment. Mad Max on the open seas!
- ርልዪረFebruary 8, 2025🌊🌎It is the future and because of global warming all the ice sheets have melted. The Earth is therefore mostly flooded. The few surviving people try to eek out an existence on artificial atolls or ships. A good romp now transferred to Blu-ray. Good Science Fiction movie with Kevin Costner at his best
