Vampire Hunter D Ratings & Reviews

In a bleak, post-nuclear future ruled by supernatural creatures, a young woman named Doris Lang is bitten by the ancient vampire Count Magnus Lee. To avoid becoming one of the undead, she hires a mysterious and stoic vampire hunter known only as D—a half-human, half-vampire warrior with a haunted past and a talking symbiotic Left Hand. What Makes It Stand Out: Atmosphere First: The film leans heavily into gothic horror aesthetics—foggy moors, crumbling castles, and eerie silence. It’s a masterclass in mood-setting. Vintage Anime Vibes: With hand-drawn animation and dramatic pacing, it’s a time capsule of 80s anime style. Some techniques may feel dated, but they add to the charm. D is Iconic: The protagonist is a blend of Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name and Dracula’s brooding mystique. His quiet demeanor and deadly precision make him unforgettable. Creative Worldbuilding: A fusion of sci-fi and fantasy, the setting includes mutants, werewolves, and cybernetic horses. It’s weird, wild, and wonderful. If you’re into moody, gothic horror with a splash of sci-fi and anime flair, Vampire Hunter D is a must-watch. It’s not just a cult classic—it’s a cornerstone of animated horror. Whether you're revisiting it or watching for the first time, it still casts a powerful spell.
Alternate Ending
Tim Brayton
The film has a good understanding of what ultimately makes any worthwhile horror film work: its atmosphere.
TV Guide
This mishmash of genres offers little.
Nerdist
Dan Casey
This is the D that your body craves. This is the D that takes place in a far-flung, post-nuclear hellscape where vampires, werewolves, and all manner of things that go bump in the night reign supreme.

One of my favorite animated films of all time...

Old enough that many of the anime techniques used herein have become cliche -- but still has a cool enough story to be worth a look.

More tedious and ugly anime
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
Above all, it's a very gothic piece of work. Long, sullen shots of decrepit manors and foggy moors make this one of the most atypical -- and interesting -- animated films to hit Austin in a long while.
